Chargebacks at AFF

Hi All,

I know what one is but what I am confused about is the process of it happening.

For instance, does a person buy a membership and then a few weeks later call up his credit card company and say,

"Hello Mrs Visa/Mastercard rep. I bought a membership at an adult dating website and they said they'd get me laid within 2 weeks. Well, two weeks have passed and I haven't gotten laid yet so I'd like to initiate a chargeback"

Visa Rep: "Oh sure! How could they do that do you! I won't even ask my supervisor about this I'll reverse the charge right now! Now, anytime you decide to change your mind on any purchase you make let me know"

So, exactly how does the process work? About 9% of my total earnings with AFF so far have been reversed from these chargebacks and I'm curious to know why this happens so often?

hey there, consumers are very smart nowadays, they know that they are protected, that's why they can do that to visa/mc. i am no expert on this.

but i'm replying to this because i just hecked out your account with us, and ran your stats.

you have only promoted us for a month last year.
all the sales you brought to us, have not shown any chargeback or refunds.
i'd like to work with you again.

Please hit me up.

It works like this.

Hello Issuing Bank, I did not authorize these charges.

Bank say OK - fuck the adult merchant, issue a charge back.

Rinse, repeat

All this because Congress many years ago sayeth unto VISA - go forth and fuck the adult internet with Serge's splintered broom handle and we shall reward you by making it hard for people to claim bankruptcy, oh and we will also make it OK for you to really fuck the people that have the hardest time paying by raising interest on the people you give way more credit to than they should ever have and they miss a payment.

9%? Over how many months?

That's nearly 1 in 10 sales.

That doesn't sound right. Any U.S. merchant over 1% chargeback of total sales is in danger of losing their merchant account.

So either you're a huge liability to AFF, or your information is incorrect.

It's not just in the adult industry, use the word "chargeback" anytime someone refuses a refund for some shitty reason, whether on the web or in walkin business.
The fine you get from a chargeback is prohibitive and getting your % too high will cost you.
Your correct the consumer is too smart and knows that if you threaten a chargeback, then we'll probably issue a refund to save the fine and the % (it's inevitable anyway).
Of course, we're going to add your name and card number to every blacklist we can so you can't use it to get into other adult sites or try it again.

AK - The reason I stopped was because I thought my conversions weren't that great but I'll answer in more detail in response to your email.

The 9% is over 3-4 years. I took my total chargebacks and divided it my my total cut of my sales and it was about 9%. I have had other webmasters tell me the same.

9% over 3-4 years... that sounds whack.

I can't believe Visa would still be doing business any merchant (internet, storefront, or otherwise) at that percentage. If I were you, I'd hit up the program and ask them what's up... and then if unsatisfied, go directly to Visa, and ask them the same.

9% seems a bit high but based on the quality of the traffic you are sending to them it could very well be the case. All adult merchants online struggle with what is predominantly fraudulent chargebacks.

I think it's also important to mention that with a small statistical sampling - 20 sales, 50 sales, 200 sales - someone could easily stumble into a retarded chargeback/refund ratio. In large numbers like hundreds or thousands of sales, it's much more rare unless the marketing, billing practices or delivered content are abusive or of little value.

I wrote them and my rep said the following:

"Usually we find 5% chargebacks to be the maximum for an account, with 9%, I’d encourage you to look into ways to minimize it. One suggestion would be minimizing the traffic from low pay countries, for instance, you have 5% of your traffic coming from low pay countries such as Brazil, India, Iran and Guatemala. Although these countries are good for free signups, when it comes to paid orders, we find a high rate of credit card chargebacks. I’d cut off the traffic from these countries."

Guess I'll be looking into that.

Agreed that over 5% is extreme for chargebacks, and 9% is a red flag. All merchants are required to keep their chargebacks low or loose services.

Maybe consider this from the wife of "2HOT2TOT" that paid with the joint credit card:

"Honey, why do we have this charge on our joint credit card?"

I wonder who's calling trying to get back some cash?

Low paying counties will through off your uniquies to sales since they rarely convert.
