You'd have to add Sebastian Bach into the group you've already mentioned. How appropriate, a thread about rock and metal for post #666

J - thats a hard question to answer. There are so many talented vocalists out there. Definately Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin comes to mind first. His voice was great 30 years ago and he has managed to take care of his vocal chords, so they still sound great today.

every singer I named would be an amazing lead singer with any rock band behind them. They just have amazing distintive rock n' roll voices.

Brian Johnson sounds like Donald Duck and he doesn't even sound that good anymore. He lived in my hometown (Sarasota) - I saw him live with some local band, Neurotica, that he had put on his label. The local kid from Neurotica sang AC/DC songs waaaay better then him. Johnson had no voice left after years of abuse. Bon Scott was a far better vocalist IMO.

I agree with Robert Plant - he was one of the best vocalists in the history of rock n' roll - but unfortunately, again, he abused himself and his voice all these years and now sounds more like Bea Arthur. No range, no tonal quality - just typical smoker's voice.

Robert Plant above all else.

A few that haven't been mentioned yet but probably should be...

Brad Delp (Boston)
Klaus Mein (Scorpions)
Geddy Lee (if you don't know what band he's with you suck)
Roger Waters (same comment as above)

And no "best rock vocalist" list would be complete without the king. Elvis rules.

If you want to get technical....

How does Kurt Cobain sound today?

Ive seen Brian Johnson perform in person myself, and I was disgusted. But, as far as the sound that was laid down back in the day, it became the standard for rock.

Robert Plant, in the studio, and in all his falsetto glory, also became the form to follow. In person... extremely disappointing.

don't even get started about Axle Rose.... lol.
