This is a bit of a crude generalization, but somewhat true.

I still think that Ableton can provide you with the technology to take 'djing' to a different place; a more interactive and improvisational place.

Pornmasta, Check him out, he has been around for a while.
http://www.tiesto.com/

If you have Sirius, he gets a lot of play on Area 33.

pornmasta 04-05-2007 07:54 PM

I'm currently listening to velvet acid christ.

Frankie Knuckles
Alan Ester (Detroit)
Derrick May (Detroit)
Kevin Saunderson (Detroit)
Todd Terry
Mike Grant (Detroit)
Juan Atkins (Detroit)

Without these guys, this wouldn't even be a conversation. That list is where House and Techno began. Right in my front yard.

We used to pay $5 to get in to an old store front, or warehouse, to hear these guys spin, and a bag of weed (that you could roll 15 joints from) was $10.

:pimp

I am from that time, I started in 91....I know frankie, derrick, todd and juan personally....we all grew up in the same scene

those guys are still tearing it up too, just like the old school days

pornmasta 04-05-2007 07:57 PM

ok lets listen to this dj

robfantasy 04-05-2007 07:57 PM

when used correctly, sure, but most don't...most are lazy and just prerecord their sets in whatever software they use...show up to a gig and hit play, and occasionally throw something else overtop of the recording to look like they are "rockin out"

fucking sasha came here a few months ago and did just that, his whole show was him getting fucked up, playing his recorded ableton set and throwing some sound effects on over top of the music every once and a while...it was sad to watch someone who once was on top of the game for mixing and technique resort to such lazy tactics to get a crowd going

robfantasy 04-05-2007 07:59 PM

PAUL VAN DYK

SANDER KLEINENBERG

DEEP DISH

are my favorites in the order.............

AdultInnovate 04-05-2007 08:02 PM

The DJ Tiesto from Germany: kyauandalbert.com

Really super beautiful music!

I am a Tiesto fan btw, my favorites are the In Search of Sunrise albums.

pornmasta 04-05-2007 08:04 PM

in my opinion it sounds too much like a kind of dream techno.
Electro and ebm rules.

at one of the last parties at BUZZ in DC.. PAUL VAN DYK played using ableton, and i did the laser show for the party so i was standing next to him the whole time watching him use ableton.. that shit is amazing. i couldnt even follow all the shit he was doing. he is definitely on another level music wise.

his sets are so energetic and take u on a journey.. more than any other dj i have heard and i hear alot of djs.

I agree and I think you've nailed it. It's laziness. There's not too many people using it as a creative tool. It's more like a mp3 player.

yeah, there are a few dj's that still enjoy doing shit on the fly, that is for sure...it is SO much better when they too

James Zabiela is amazing when it comes to ableton and using everything in front of him...he will be mixing on the fly in ableton and then get 2 cd decks in at the same time, while scratching on turntables...that is some cool shit to watch

but when you start paying someone $10-15k to show up and play music, they start getting a big head and becoming lazy

pornmasta 04-05-2007 08:12 PM

Best DJ in the world? :winkwink:

Dj - BoKo number 1 in the world

Danny B 04-06-2007 01:21 AM

Dave Clarke an dj UMEK for their skills. I worked in the Dutch dance industry for several years and have seen almost all of them.

But more important: It's not who's the best DJ, it's all about the party. The DJ is just a tool.

I went to see Dave Clarke some time ago. And ran into dj Preach. Here's a video. Party is called Awakenings and it's the best of it's kind

KICK ASS PARTY VIDEO
