I hate having to tip waitresses/waiters sometimes

Me and my gf just went out to get something to eat. nothing fancy just a place close to us. the waitress was good at first, then went downhill fast.

i wasnt being rude at all, trying to be as nice as possible so there is no spit in my stuff, but it takes forever to get our food, AND i had to remind her (we ordered sandwhiches btw) about my gf's salad twice. then she comes back and asked me again what I ordered... ok no biggie, people forget... although she wrote it down.

im getting kind of frustrated because i did not plan on sitting at this place for 45 minutes to get a quick bite. the people that sat behind us came in 10 minutes before us AND left before i even got the check.

finally she comes by with the check and hands it to me and says her shift is over. so im like, ok well thanks have a good night, and she looks at me and laughs and says "i need you to pay it now." so i give her my card and shes gone for over 15 minutes. I walk around trying to find her then she comes back with her jacket and purse and hands me the reciept.

this is what REALLY makes me heated... she stands right next to me and asks me to sign the reciept. so i didnt want to leave a nice tip because she sucked, but she is stairing right at me. so i left her 15% and he gave me this dirty look and said really snotty "gee, thanks" and walked away. WTF whore?

That's bad service. However I do not tip in those circumstances. A few months back I went to a steak place in town. We go there fairly regularly, so we kinda know the general routine.

We get this punk ass kid, and he has to be reminded to bring us the bread that comes before the meal, our drinks, and then he gets part of the order wrong. The manager, or someone else ends up bringing us out our food, and getting us refills.

In the end we had to ask for the check twice. I waited 15 minutes, and then go up to the counter. I ask for the check there, but she tells me the waiter has to give it to us. She goes and finds him. He comes up, gives me the check, I give him my card. He runs it. Gives me the thing to sign. I do, and for tip, put a big fat 0 with a line through it. Then circle my amount for the bill.

He asks me if I did that because I left the tip at the table? I told him, "No. The tip is you give better service. Have a nice day."

My friend dies laughing. We leave. He stands there in awe.

Tipping is not mandatory it's called a tip for a reason.

I used to be a big tipper across the board. No more. It is not appreciated and it creates this exact kind of situation. Now if someone gives you a great dining experience that is one thing. But for this type of situation she didn;'t deserve a penny.

I sometimes like to leave literally a 1 cent tip if the service is really bad, but i tip very well if they seem to go out of their way.

Sure I go there a lot, but if I had him again as a waiter, I would just ask to be sat somewhere else. On the other hand, for those who provide excellent service, get me refills before I ask, and we do not have to ask for ketchup, A1, etc necause they come prepared. They get a 25%+ tip easily.

If i get good service, even when by myself, I will tip $5 on a $10 meal.

But when the service sucks ass, I make sure I get the point across. It's called a gratuity for a reason. I have bad days also, and if I do not do good work, I do not get paid.

Dude, I spent a long time in the service industry as a Bartender, and a Limo Driver. I have a hard time not tipping because I know how bad it is sometimes and people don't really give a shit, because they will never see you again.

But here is my humble opinion after 15 years in that business.

I would have to say that you get what you pay for.

I don't eat at quick places. If I want something quick I make a sandwich. Or go to 7-11. They have remarkably good tasting chicken salad sandwiches.

But if I want to eat out I always go to more posh places to eat and tip accordingly and get what I want. I want to be greeted. The guy or gal at the front door should know both me and my GF by name and they should ask about our kids. They get tipped. The waiters are tipped. If it is a Teppan restaurant the chef is also tipped (separately).

When my friends dine with me and my GF they really trip out. "Wow, they know your name and bring you your drinks without you even asking (before we are seated/at the bar). The TV is automatically switched to the Laker game or Angels game or Dodgers or what ever is on that night and we have previously requested.

When someone at a sports bar gets in my face (once I didn't even know the guy behind me was cocking his fist to cheap shot me in the back of the head) they are escorted outside and/or thrashed by the staff immediately.

Tipping is important. Remember that bitch has a shitty life. I would have brightened her day so that if I am ever in there again she would remember who I am....

Its a lot different in LA, then anywhere else i've been for the food industry. I have friends that have worked and say how shitty it is and how little they get paid, but i still dont understand why they dont get a better job, their not in high school

my problem is I feel bad for these people even tho i shouldnt. however, there has been 2 times where i left a shitty tip (like a buck) and they actually chase after me.

I think the real reason I tip at most places that i get shitty service is because I go back there often. If i rarely went there, i probably would of stiffed her on a tip, but Im there pretty often (Jerrys Deli). I would hate to come back and have her as my waitress again. ill just leave a little heated and let it go.

HOWEVER, when i go somewhere i normally dont and this happens, its a lot easier to leave nothing... btw, if you are to leave $0 WRITE ZERO because this whore decided to put a "1" infront and i never noticed until i was going thru reciepts and wanted to check.. luckly got it back from amex.

nonetheless, I remember seeing some shit on TV a while back about a fake food services union and how they want to make a manditory 20%... that is SHIT.

I refuse to eat at a restaurant if they require you to tip, PERIOD. It's just so that in cases like yours I don't get fucked by being forced to tip for shitty service. You shouldn’t have given her a red cent in the form of a tip… what a bitch. I always tip well because I know how hard most waiters and waitresses work, usually 25% and sometimes more. Those who fail to provide adequate service won’t get shit from me in the form of a tip.

I have always been confused by how we decided who to tip. When I was in high school i worked at a little store/gas station. In Oregon you can't pump your own gas, the attendant has to. I the year I worked there I got a tip once at christmas. So if someone brings you your food you tip, but not if they pump your gas. and if they bring you fast food you don't tip, unless they are bringing a pizza to your house. Its bizzare.

I still think tipping was invented by business owners so they don't have to pay a higher wage. If someone waits tables and is good they can make some decent money in tips. I had a friend who, while in college, made about 17 bucks an hour waiting tables. His first job out of college, with a degree, only paid $13. The business owners only have to pay minimum wage and the workers make more and probably don't claim half of it on their taxes.

As for me tipping. If I go there a lot and have one bad experience, no prob. I still tip because I frequent the place. If I go somewhere and it's not a regular place I go to I will not leave a tip if the service sucked. I figure they get their wage to take the order and bring the food. The tip is for anything beyond that.

When you feel obligated to tip a shitty waitress (and have the opportunity):

-Place tip inside a glass of water.

-Grab the thin laminated menus and place on top of water glass.

-Quickly, but firmly, flip the glass over and place near the edge of the table, with the menu now underneath the upside-down glass.

-Carefully slide menu out from underneath the glass.

The glass has to be picked up and spilled everywhere to retrieve tip, ultimately achieving goal of pissing off the waitress...but at least you tipped.

I have worked food service before (years ago now) and so has my wife. I agree that you should never tip if the server sucks or gets thing really screwed up.

If the food is slow at someplace that is busy, then it probably isn't their fault, but if it is wrong, or cold, or dead from sitting under the heat lamp, that sure as hell is. Don't make me wait for refills on my drinks, make sure I have everything I need, make me happy, and I will tip you well. Don't and I will give you crap, 'cause you did nothing more than a trained monkey could have done.

Personally I like systems where people get paid for their performance. This is why I hate unions, they want big bucks but offer no increase in output in return. Hell in this industry, your income is directly tied to your effort. Probably the reason I like it.

i once had someone server me and my wife and they were crap.
the women said no to whatever i asked and the service was slow and crappy.
i fucked her over though. not leaving anything would have pissed her off but leaving her a bit less then she expected pissed her off even more and told her i was not happy.

I'm in montreal and if you do not tip people will actually follow you outside the restaurant asking why you did not tip, what i do is follow them back in ask to speak to the manager and explain it to him
