Hey a domain that would actually be useful

    http://www.theregister.com/2007/03/29/banking_domain/

Security watchers are calling on net governance body ICANN to adopt a new top level domain name to be used exclusively by registered banks and financial organisations.

A .safe or .sure domain name would give consumers increased piece of mind that they are dealing with a legitimate financial institution while potentially making it easier to identify rogue sites.

If ICANN introduced a .safe domain (or .sure or .bank), which could only be used by registered financial institutions, it would allow security providers to create better software to protect the public, according to F-Secure.

bank systems rarely get hacked. In fact never heard of one having been so, but never say never.

Still, it would prevent phishing scams - the bane of the banking world...

Well if all banks are using a .bank and you click a link in your e-mail that's not a .bank then you deserve to get your money stolen.

Watch NBC's Dateline Tuesday for the second part of their credit card fraud / online theft report. Look at all the backwater hicks who are falling victim to phishing schemes. They don't even know to look for httpS. Lt alone the difference in a TLD. "It had all the colors and pictures of Bank of America in it". Dot bank is going to make any difference plus they are easy enough to spoof. Look at all the dot gov and dot edu spoofs in google SEPRings and emails.

But whatever helps people sleep better at night lol. Identity fraud (which covers a lot of areas now) is a 1.5 billion dollar a year industry. Going to take a lot to stop that and phishing is pretty high on the methods list.

Well it's not going to hurt. It most likely will help at least somewhat and it's not going to effect you( unlike .XXX ) if a .bank came into being so why be against it?

Oh, I'm NOT against the 'dot bank' at all. I'm just pissed that governments and cooperation's continue to "protect" people with bullshit schemes and brick walls with holes in them. Instead of just educating people. They've been trying to step up for awhile now but are seriously lacking. If they spend one commerical's worth of funding into informing and actually helping solving the issues. They wouldn't need to keep coming up with band-aid solutions every 6 months.

You also, almost never, hear about banks being robbed but it happens almost daily.

They don't tell the general public when these things occur.

Uh, no. Bank's databases are so large and complex is virtually impossible for them to do major upgrades in database storage and mainframe outline. I've been a programmer for far too many years. Buddies of mine here in the states and over seas do coding for banks. I hear stories of their dBase days and outdated debugging and obsolete programming languages. You'd be surprised at what some of the largest banks depend on, lol.

Plus they are attacked almost daily. They only release that information if forced too. Like StuartD said...
