Too bad you didn't break the rebel xt - it'd be a good excuse to get a real camera.

I hear the Canon 50mm f1.8 is a shonky plasticky lens. I once had a cam mounted on a tripod and it tipped and crashed, lens first. I expected it to live up to its rep and be in pieces but all it had were a few cosmetic scratches on the plastic.

How did you break yours?

Broke your first lens? LOL, you expecting to break more?

I sold my 18-55mm within the first month of buying my first DSLR, replaced it with a 17-40mm L and a 50mm f/1.4 prime.

The Digital Rebel (300D) is a good size, although it's a bit slow and function limited compared to the newer offerings
The Digital Rebel XT (350D) / XTi (400D) is too small for my hands
