lol, you got it backwards... PS3 launched too *late*, around a year late. they held up everything so they could get the blueray drive into them, which really hurt the platform as its turned out... aside from the astronomical price point they are losing developers and even worse, their exclusive deals. recent weeks have shown that both the Final Fantasy and MGS franchise are going multi-platform, pretty obviously due to the small installed base of PS3s and the fact they aren't moving off of shelves.
sony got greedy, plain and simple, and couldn't resist using the PS3 as a vehicle for trying to push a new media format... and their paying the price for it now. but for us consumers its all good, at best Sony losing out on a generation will give them good motivation to really be competitive and come back in a good way for PS4..
