Windows VISTA: 20 million units sold in February alone

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20070326/D8O43BSO0.html

Looks like there are reasons why the toolbar and malware guys are getting bold... their shit don't work on vista.

Well, if you read the article, it beat out the opening month for XP, which push 17 million. But considering that the PC market is much larger, well... it isn't exactly overwhelming.

With issues from drivers to an all out campaign by apple to piss all over microsoft (and specifically NOT make Itunes and other apple products work with Vista) has hurt, at least in the short run.

I encourage every normal surfer type to go to Vista as soon as they can, because the added levels of security against the worst of the hacks is worth the effort.

People are more computer savy right now... eventually everyone will flip to vista, but they know that doing it at the beginning is suicidal....

Vista is terrible, I am not able to work or function on this piece of crap software. It's terrible, hard to use, not functional, has tons of bugs.
I probably aged 5 years of my life dealing with this junk in the last 2 weeks.

All this means is that more computers are being sold than when XP was released, this doesn't mean Vista sold better than XP proportionally. That article makes it pretty clear -- 51 million PCs sold in 2002, 96 million PCs estimated to be sold in 2007 -- and there is the fact that Microsoft declined to show the numbers of Vista being sold at retail vs. those copies being bundled with a PC.

Vista brings nothing new to the table; if I had wanted a fancy bullshit GUI I would have switched to a Mac years ago. It’s the same reason I didn’t upgrade from 98SE to ME – ME didn’t bring anything new that I needed. XP did, so I upgraded. Vista so far hasn’t so I have no reason at all to upgrade until the programs I use stop making updates for XP.

I give up! I admit defeat! I just ordered XP from Newegg and requested to have it sent next day air. I have not been able to work for 2 weeks on this piece of crap Vista. It's CRAP CRAP CRAP. CRAP CRAP CRAP!

Itunes works on vista... with no problem... and drives are out there, its up to the hardware companies to produce them. it's not MS fault that a few hardware companies are slow to make drives. The OS can't stay the same forever, at some put a major upgrade is needed. Vista is 100 times better than XP and really stable... i've had no problems with vista Ultimate and my main home server is up 24/7 with no issues.

Is it just me, or does it seem like Apple traded some of their interface for Microsofts processors? Perhaps a deal behind doors?

Vista works great!! Yes they need to iron some things out, but the majority of the issues are because the 3rd party hardware/software vendors are taking their sweet ass time. Learn how to use this new OS and take a look under the hood and you will see that this OS is solid.

Microsoft does not manufacture or sell processors. Did you mean Intel?

It took like 3 years for xp to be 'safe' (with SP2) and compatible with almost all hardware and software. Anyways it still has problems sometimes.
I would not install Vista till 2 years from it's launch...

exactly. The average business user will have no use for vista for at least a few years.

people would go for "new" products...they always do. I'll wait for the Vista issues to be straightened out first before actually using them.

"According to PC Advisor, Vista sales are off 60% compared to the 2001 launch of Windows XP. Revenue is also down by 23% so far with Vista's launch."

A lot of people think all Vista has over XP is aero glass. Here's a link for you guys. ;)

I partitioned my drive and loaded Vista Ultimate on one of them. So far no real quirks. Had to get a sound card. iTunes works fine on mine.

Prime time to go to Vista is when its first SP is coming out and all the hardware and software vendors properly moved to it, until then is a bit of a productivity/value killer (for me at least)

Exactly. Read this:
Quote:
I was trying to set up a daily backup, simply copying all my stuff from one hard drive to a second one, without any kind of compression.

Vista stores all my documents and settings in a single folder called /users/AK. So all I had to do was back up that entire folder.

I tried Microsoft's own (and excellent) RoboCopy tool. It gave me an error. I tried 2BrightSparks's (also excellent) SyncBack. Another error. I tried a neat one I found called Karen's Replicator. Ditto.

All three had the same problem: A path was too long. I apparently had too many nested folders.

I looked more closely and found the problem. They were all trying to back up C:\users\AK\Application Data \Application Data \Application Data \Application Data ? and so on, ad infinitum.

Huh?

I Googled and found the answer. Vista stores its application data in a folder called AppData. Previous version of Windows used \Local Settings\Application Data.

To make sure old programs can find the new folder, Microsoft added hidden files called "junctions." If a program tries to access "Application Data" path, the junction sends it to "AppData."

I had run into an infinite loop. The Application Data folder redirected the software to the AppData folder, where somehow there was some reference back to Application Data. It looped forever.

The only way to fix a screwy junction was by using one of a handful of obscure programs some obscure programmers have created, all of which warn you, essentially, not to use them. Ironic, but true. Still, I messed and removed the troublesome hidden file and my backup software started working.

Other problems ranged from the mildly annoying (there's no simple way to remove items from the "New" context menu) to the absolutely frustrating.

In that latter category is the latest bugaboo: Photoshop suddenly decided to stop working. It told me "an error has been detected with a required application library" and refused to run. No amount of coaxing would change things, and neither running the program as Administrator nor reinstalling helped.

Finally, after much searching, I found the only solution that worked: I got Vista to reveal its hidden Administrator account, which I logged into. Now Photoshop works. So I moved all my stuff and now I log in as Administrator. I'm not supposed to ? it's a security risk ? but it's that or do without Photoshop.

Even as Administrator, minor problems persist. Shortcuts to search folders cause Windows Explorer to crash. Photo Gallery doesn't rotate images properly. In short, unlike with XP, when I sit down I'm never 100% sure things are going to work properly.

These would be the people that up until two versions ago actually had to manually assign memory settings to their programs because the operating system couldn't manage by itself?

If they are laughing it is only at themselves.
