Ive been playing for a while and am not that good but learning the basic chords and then using Guitar Pro 4 has helped a lot. I go and download songs I like from mysongbook.com and learn a new tune every week.

After you learn your basic chords, and you learn what a power chord is, you should definitely learn a few scales. They're a huge, huge, huge help.

Having loads of fun. Some good tips in this thread so far. I have been learning a few notes, and can play some very simple songs now. :) Picked up a Korg tuner that works quite well.
