favicon.ico not found

I get a lot of errors like this:

[Sun Aug 11 16:58:38 2002] [error] [client 217.3.242.211] File does not exist: /.../.../.../.../favicon.ico

Is that from return bookmarkers? The browser tries to load the icon of the site when it is bookmark?

Despite that, how can I make some icons?

I find a good icon editor will often do it.

what a coincidence... just 20 mins ago I've made a favicon for my site.

start a 32x32 document in Photoshop (or whatever graphic software you're using), design the favicon then save it as .gif .

go to www.irfanview.com , download the program (it's an image viewer) , install it and then load the gif file in irfanview and save it as .ico .

Upload the .ico in the same dir with index.html and put this line in index.html: <LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="/favicon.ico"> in your <head> </head> section (of course you can insert the icon in all your pages).

Good Luck

an icon is a bmp file actually
make it in photoshop/fireworks/whatever and export as a bmp
then just rename it to .ico

That's the best advice yet. No need to install anything but photoshop. Thanks!

Are you all sure it is suppose to be 32x32? The one in my address bar is only 19x19 or 20x20.

must be 16x16x8 for the bmp method

btw
http://www.favicon.com
these guys say bmp is not ico and must be used a converter (no wonder - they're selling one)
it's true and you do need it if you want your icons to be transparent

but bmp2ico does work
i've made all my fav icons in ps and they all work like charm

What a shitty site is this http://www.irfanview.com/english.htm ? Go from the front to the first frame page and all you get is "reset by peer" errors for each and every graphic they have on their page = click 12x o.k. and end up with a 1/2 loaded page (main frame missing) --- and this on ADSL === probably don't get a thing on 56k.

I tried to make one as a bmp and then rename it to .ico = it DID NOT WORK!
Hint: if it's in the correct format it'll display the way you designed it in WINDOWS Explorer (even under 'details' view) just as other icons for programs display (so instead of the icon of whatever graphic program you have associated with .ico files you actually get to see your favicon!).

In the old days favicon.com had an online-editor, all you can do now is download the time-limited trial of their software... I believe that the most reliable image size is the smaller version of 16x16 pixels = not much room to play with...

the favicon.ico file (don't change name!) has to be in your MAIN directory, and you can point to it in the header of your index page with <xmp><LINK href="http://www.yourdomain.com/favicon.ico" rel="SHORTCUT ICON"></xmp>

...Windows is much less complicated than I once suspected.

Good tip!
