Opinions: Out of the aff biz, should aff's still pay?

Hello all

I used to be very active as an affiliate webmaster. Did fairly well for awhile, and then the bottom dropped out and no matter how many hours I spent or what I attempted to do, would make any real money. But that's all another story for some other thread.

The question is: most affiliates have a minimum amount you must make before they'll send you the money you've earned. I have a few affiliates who just would not convert for the life of me, OR when I got rid of all my domains, I didn't quite meet their minimum, and there is some of my money sitting there with them still.

If I email them asking to cash out and cancel my account with them, and have them send me the money that I HAVE earned up to that point. Should they pay me? Or should they just be allowed to keep the business I sent to them with my own sweat, time, and money?

Forget about sticking to hardcore TOS for a minute and think considerately and ethically, rather than simply screwing people out of their money.

I have seen one unnamed company on here, posting a thread how they're "thrilled to be giving away a Ferrari!", yet when I want to simply cash out with the money I've earned (~$14), all of my emails go ignored.

Yep, they should pay it.

Unfortunately, not everybody in this...or any other business, does the right thing.

Sponsors include a minimum payout clause in their TOS, so that they wont have to cut small checks under $50 to all their affiliates every period. For the most part, that clause is not intended to allow the sponsor to keep one's money forever if one has not reached the minimum payout. So if you email them, stating you'd like to collect your earnings and have your account closed, then I think they should honor that.

yep, the sponsor should honour it.. I know here at WEGCash if a webmaster wishes to close their account and receive their final balance we have no problem with that.

Yes, they should pay you and I honestly don't know of any reputable programs that would have a problem doing so.

Frankly I think every program should close out their fiscal year by paying out on all affiliate accounts, but that doesn't happen. I think we all have a few hundred sitting around here or there with programs we just couldn't sell. It's a bummer but ends up going in the "cost of doing business" column.

Business ethical standards are usually consistent, so it shouldn't come as a surprize that a sponsor who works with Zango and turns a blind eye to content theft, would also retain minor earnings, even when someone wants to "cash out".

Certainly, they should pay you what they owe you. I can understand if they want to charge you small service fee for cutting a cheque, but any type of electronic payment shouldn't be a problem.

We actually address this situation in our ToS; we will fully pay out any closed account, as long as there is at least $10 to be paid. I think that's fair.

It never hurts to ask the Affiliate Manager for a payout before the minimum is met. Any reputable company should payout if asked and you wish to close your account. I would do it for ya. But dont abuse it.

You ever stop to figure out how much money FriendFinder - for example - must have made over the years from money that thousands of affiliates - some of them signed up under multiple programs (every one with its own minimum payout) - have left behind, either because they never earned enough, or because small amounts were left when they quit the business or switched sponsors?

thought so at first too... Then re-read the title and it clicked.

Also I would think at the end of the year all accounts should be paid out regardless. Just clear the books for the start of the year.

If you send a notice to every program that your company is in wrap-up mode and that you need to collect any and all sums due to terminate your business, they will normally comply, regardless of the current payout levels. That is normal.

However, they will also terminate your accounts at that point, and you would love any recurring billings or other that might occur after that.

I personally have probably a couple hundreads in unpaid dues in programs I tried that didn't work over the years ...

Never tried to collect it since I knew what I was getting into upfront.

it's in their TOS, and you agreed to it...

Most programs should pay you if you ask to close your account thought.

Try doing that with AFF and if you get an answer, it will be that you will not be paid out until you reach the minimum. I know: I did it a few months ago and I still have their response, should anyone be in doubt.

You should email them, wait a reasonable amount of time and then out them. I'd love to know which companies won't honor that request.

When a webmaster lives in a country that charges fees to cash checks, they get pissed off if you send them a check for a small amount when they didn't ask for it.

If a webmaster wants to close their account, we will send them any unpaid balance during the next payout cycle.

Hello all,

Thanks for the replies. It is funny that when I made the topic I didn't mean to associate the "aff" in the title with adult friend finder, even though that is the company I'm currently having the issue with. I just figured GFY didn't allow super long topic titles.

For anyone interested, here is the correspondence so far between us:

Quote:
Hello,

I know that my current balance as an affiliate does not yet meet the minimum
payout for a check to be sent. However, I have left he adult webmaster affiliate
business, and am requesting to "check out", and be paid for what I have earned up to this point across all of my affiliate accounts.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Best regards
And their only reply:

Quote:
Dear Member,

Thank you for your email. However, since you have not yet met your minimum
threshold, we cannot approve a payment for you. This applies to all the accounts under our affiliate program. We encourage you to keep it open and just coollect the traffic so that we can then pay you out when you have met the program requirements. Please contact us if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Alice T.
Affiliates Support
I emailed them twice more after this making it clear I no longer have any domains to even have a link of theirs on, with ZERO reply. I guess that's how they make their money; by sticking hardcore to their TOS in order to keep small amounts of money some webmasters have earned when their company couldn't convert the rest of the traffic. Small amounts add up to big cash (Ferrari) over time.

I'm now having the same exact issue with PECash.

While I can't say the same for AFF, I have like PECash as a sponsor over the span of time I have used them. It's a damn shame they have to behave in this manner.

Quote:

You have not earned the minimum payout yet which is $20.00. If I deactivate this account, we will not cut a check for under $20.00. I would recommend keeping it open at least until your commissions total more then $20.00 and then I will deactivate the account.

If I can be of any assistance, please feel free to call or write.

This is also one of the main reasons I have left the business, slimy behavior from sponsors. We're not talking large amounts of money here. My account balance that they won't cut a check for? $19.21.

79 cents is holding them back from cutting a check.

$14 sitting in each of 10 sponsors' accounts adds up to $140

Call 'em up and if you don't get assistance, insist on speaking with someone who isn't a front line person; the person who first answers or emails probably doesn't have the authority (and doesn't care) to solve your problem, while someone with a brain probably will care and want to solve your problem. This would apply to the others as well... some programs have staff that are trained to send you boilerplate responses and don't know how to do anything else.

We are one of the companys with a minimum. However all it takes is a single email and we have no problem cashing out what is in your account. I think companys should send you what you are owed. Even if it is 14 dollars or 17 dollars. Its still money that you earned. I cant see any reputable company saying no to that request.

no offense, but it takes money to write checks and do book keeping. I have an account that i was pushing back in the day, and im a few dollars short of their $200 min payout. Ive written to them asking to cash out but they reply with no. I accept that because I accepted that when i signed up.

Although i wish i had the money, im still trying to push to get that last sale so i can move on, but its hard when the conversion is 1:20,000

I have no problems with minimum's, when you still push or plan on pushing traffic to the sponsor. But once you're done with a company and want to be cut loose, I feel they should cough up whatever amount I have earned. It's my money.

From the replies, it sounds like all of the other sponsors on here are class acts and would do so, and Danni's was actually so polite about it when I asked them, that I felt bad for doing it! lol. They didn't even close my account even though I no longer even have any domains to promote traffic with.

Attn Everyone:

We have paid the affiliate in question during our next check run. I have met with the people that need be, and set this affiliates minimum payout to $0 so he will get paid.
It's kind of funny, I get so little request for this, I wasn't sure what to do. PEcash has paid out less than our minimum of $20.00!!!

Yes, I can verify that in PECash's circumstance, after some unfortunate prodding, which I really hate having to do, was emailed a notice that I will be getting paid. (If that check never comes, I'll be mentioning it here ) That is all I asked for, and like I mentioned, before this I had always really liked them as a sponsor.

My question in regard to PECash's post though, if you didn't know what to do, why just automatically send out a denial email (twice, with the second one taking 4 days to receive) stating you're keeping my cash, rather than just contact 'the people that need be' after the first email? In the second email where I offered to send you the money difference just to get the check, I think would automatically trigger that response if you were unsure what to do?

In (a limited) defense of affiliate programs... I can understand waiting for a period or 2 after the account has been closed just to try to minimize taking a loss from future chargebacks / refunds. That's part of the reason for the minimum in the first place, to protect against fraud.

Shafted (with a woping 10 posts),

Exactly as stated previously, when I ever do get an e-mail like this, and it's been maybe 2 times, and amazingly, someone demanding their 20 bucks, I can not just bend over and mail a check as soon as the e-mail arrives, because as this has been done before (once), all of a sudden, there's a chargeback on the account and my check is already out the door, and then we are overpaying you for money you DID NOT earn, understand? I guess what you DON"T understand is, the minimum payouts are declared in the TOS of business like ourselves to PROTECT us from people who have nothing better to do with their time then to scam stand up business and good people for a buck. Just getting this off my chest people.

Although i wish i had the money, im still trying to push to get that last sale so i can move on, but its hard when the conversion is 1:20,000
Damn! That is a bad ratio.

Good luck on that last sale!

First off, post count means nothing other than stroking your own e-peen. I have much more important things to do with my time than sit around all day reading and replying to forums. And after I build up my e-peen count on this forum and have to post something on some other forum somewhere, then what? I guess that means I'm a newb all over again to the high e-peener's there, eh? I find it interesting that a 'professional' company (or representative of one) would get into taking little personal pot shots like that (and the rest).

Second, that 20 dollars has literally been sitting there for months and months. I'm sure that would show up in your records if you were to of looked.

Third, and most importantly, if you don't know what to do, (this applies to any job anyone does anywhere), ASK SOMEONE WHO DOES. Like you said you ended up finally doing. Instead you wasted both of our time, and it has turned into a pissing contest when it could of just been all done after the first email without a negative word said.

The waiting time I was talking about was talking about, was the 4 days wait it took you to simply reply with a "we do not have any paypal accounts, thanks for writing.", when I offered to send you via Paypal the 79 cents just so I could get my money. Which by the way, instead of leaving it at that, you could of offered another way of me getting the money to you. Bottom line is obvious, you were trying to shrug me off and keep the money.

I already stated I have no problem with minimums when I plan of continuing with a sponsor, however when it comes time to leave them, this "we can't give you your money because you haven't reached our minimum" doesn't float well with me, and apparently most of the other posters. You told me that twice, including after my offer to send you the money to make up the (79 cent) difference.
