eru's 1998 mitsubishi 3000gt SL thread

Here's the status for all those who care (I think it's just me).

Went to the dealership today and test drove! Rides great. I was offered a auto-loan and am going to have a meeting on Monday to settle it. With luck I'll be driving in my new baby on Monday afternoon

This car rocks!

Thats a smart move.

A friend of ours had a Mitsubishi and he was constantly tightening the bolts up. I don't know alot about imports, but he said there was alot of aluminum in his. It was several years ago tho.

Watch the timing belt close when its checked as well. His went out every 2 yrs but he drove like a fool .

I drove an IROC for several years. No bolt problems with those.

Yea -- the dealer guarentees that this car will pass inspection so if the mechanic finds anything wrong, they'll replace it no charge. I was nervous about the loan -- I have no credit (I only have had one card for a few months and it is secured) and my business is less than a year old so no tax returns. Hopefully the loan I am offered is good (not like 300% interest) or I will be pissed off.

first mistake is buying it from a dealership, look private first, you will get it cheaper!

I did look private to no avail. Besides, the dealer's asking price is just a little bit higher than the Kelly blue-book price.

They had a 99-base model in dark green and also had a mint condition '95 SL Spyder in red.

yeah... but when the car is a few years old, paying the extra price at a dealer isn't so much of a bad idea.

most of them have a name to protect... when i was younger, my pappy bought an almost new benz from a dealer. i wondered why until he made the comment that it is better bought from an official dealer (i,e. a benz dealer, mitsubishi dealer, ford dealer, etc) rather than "john smith's car sales" because they have a name to protect and and when you're already paying a lot for something, a little extra shouldn't hurt the wallet unless someone knows that they can't really afford it in the first place.

running all the checks by certified mechanics and so forth is all good... but if a problem arises after the car is sold, the dealer will still be around. 99.6% of the time they'll live up to their promises and won't give hassle like a small guy could, everything is usually done properly with no corners cut. again, the real dealer has a name to protect.

john smith's car sales, saves $4k, but come back a month later and they could be out of business...

Yup -- the only thing that I think needs replacing is the tires as they look worn. Of course, there is a chance the mechanic can find some internal gremlins that need to be changed.

The dealer has a 60-day warrenty on top of the 60,000mile company warrenty -- I'm trying to get 90 days.

I had insurance in Vegas (24 hour alkie town, highest insurance in anywhere) on a 2001 Lightning and it was only $1650 a year. Ya better check around as that price for a 98 Ricer is way outta line.

Not sure -- I did notice a "racing" sticker on the side of the car in the corner -- perhaps the previous owner did some modifications.

Here is why I have to pay $5500.

#1 I live in NJ -- highest auto insurance rates in the country

#2 I am 18. A young, "inexperienced" driver.

#3 The car is black. Harder to make out at night apparently.

#4 It's classified as a high speed sports car -- this is the highest bracket in terms of insurance rates.

That's terrible. I know drunks that pay only $6000 per year (Canadian!) for insurance AFTER they've been convicted of impaired driving. And it only stays that high for about 2 years or so, then it starts to drop again.

why not get an american car when you live in the US?

in europe they think the american cars are coolest and they are overpriced. and its visa versa here..

for now, my favorite american (not super) sports car is dodge viper.. you dont see too many of them around like a vette, and they are really powerfull..

I don't like Vipers at all. The front is *way* too long. American cars blow except for very few exceptions (too lazy to list). I'm not a fan of European cars either (except British and Italian).

Buying private might be cheaper but the sale is :AS IS:... even if you get a written warranty its hard to make it stick in court. lol

Plus you have the downtime waiting to GET to court to fight. A dealer just does the repairs since they have particular laws that they must follow.

American cars seem to break down faster then Japanese cars.

The only reason Americans buy American cars is to help the Economy. If you don't give a shit about your own boys making the car you get a Japanese.
You know damn well the Japanese car is better but buying one doesn't help the US.

If you have lots of money can buy Italian cars which kick ass.

(edited because it sounded retarded)

I buy American because I prefer them over anything else, with the exception of some of the pricey German or Italian cars, which I can't afford anyway. I'd take a new Vette or Viper over most of those as well.

Actually My post above was talking about cars under 30 grand. But I forget to mention the price.
America has some nice pricy cars, as does Germany, Italy, Japan, England.
But for people like myself who can't afford anything above 30K I like to go with japanese above American.
