Can any of you security experts recommend a specific program or set of programs that will put a stop to the constant virus and spyware problem that my parents are having? I coached them a bit about safe browsing habits and that helped a lot, but occasionally they still manage to pick something up from somewhere. My mom likes to play online games and my dad looks at sports sites and the weather, so it's not like they're surfing russian porn or something. Currently I just have them set up with AVG. Any help would be appreciated, free or commercial products. Thanks

Get an IMac, or a Mac mini, set them up with Firefox with the No Script extension, and you're all set.

I agree. Ever hear of the Dummies books? Like Cooking for Dummies or Dog Grooming for Dummies etc....? Well Macs are like computers for dummies. FireFox would be Browsers for Dummies.

I've got them on Firefox , but there's no way the no script thing will work because it totally disables so many sites. They'd be calling me 5 times a day "Why wont such and such site work anymore?"

As for setting them up on a Mac... ha. Yeah right.

There's no use in even trying. My grandparents had the same problem. Easier just to stop by every 6 months and format their hard drive.

Actually something like Norton System Works seems to protect better for the computer illiterate. I absolutely HATE it and wouldn't let a copy of it even sit beside my own computer, but for people with no clue it seems to stop a lot of stuff. It's definitely more aggressive than AVG. You might want to try something like that. |
