-seo Thread- Xhtml

does having a lot of errors in your xhtml affect how google ranks you? Is there a wordpress plugin or something else i can use to automatically validate my xhtml in my blogs?

there is an option in Wordpress itself to 'correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically' if that helps.

wp-admin: options > writing 'WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically'

in my experience, sometimes broken xhtml has better results in seo point of view.
google really doesn't care if you have valid xhtml or not. if it was the case 90% of the internet wouldn't be indexed.

Every little bit helps, especially when it comes down to reducing the size of the markup itself.

Many SEOs recommend that generated code (the code sent to browser) be smaller than 100kb (or even 40kb).

This means moving as much of your CSS & Javascript to external files, and removing as much presentational HTML elements and attributes to CSS rather than in the document.

That being said, there are scores of more important things for SEO than markup quality.

Valid code is overrated, at least at the moment, google would crawl a slice of bread if you can somehow manage to get it online.

In the future this may change, so trying to reduce errors to a minimum is certainly a good idea, but for now there is no need to worry at all.

I somewhat disagree, and from personal experience.
While it isn't the end-all of getting better rankings, it almost certainly helps. I've validated several sites and did see a few bounce out of the supplementals. While I can't prove that was the cause, there wasn't much else done otherwise. At the very least, it obviously didn't hurt.

Another way to look at it is that Google looks at just about everything, including whether documents are valid. So every area you can improve helps. Having said that I wouldn't obsess over it or "break" your site to validate.

well the option in wordpress doesnt really do anything as my pages still have 100's of errors on them. Also, i have done every other aspect of SEO, so i am just tryin to do it all and this is the last thing i can do.

I don't think it goes back and rectifies errors that are already there. It will work on new posts.

In my opinion, It doesn't affect your ranking negatively.

Google's homepage itself doesn't get validated correctly http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=www.google.com

I do.
First thing I do whenever there's a rendering problem somewhere is validate the markup. Wanna know why something looks fucked up? First, make sure it isn't your fault. Only then can you start chasing down things like browser inconsistencies, etc.

Of course, that's only if you care about the quality of your work...

http://validator.w3.org/
Result: Failed validation, 192 errors

192 errors from a site with a #2 ranking on a search term that does $1k+ a month.
