How well do you think that adult advertising would do on Mainstream

sites? How does it do?

For example, myspace, or dating sites. ... All pending that you have to be 18 to have an account on the site.

For example, on TV, Seinfeld is obviously geared towards a mainstream audience, as is Will and Grace, yet both have phone sex advertisments during the show (post 10pm syndication).

Seems the majority of adult ad purchases are made from sites that a clearly defined as Adult.

I think companies like Adult Friend Finder have done a pretty good job getting themselves plugged in mainstream markets, and I'm sure they've done incredibly well with it.

Granted, they're kind of cross-over, but I'd think you'd need some sort of cross-over property to use as a middle point anyway if your end goal was to market XXX.

mainstream advertising works great for adult.
however, there are a million barriers against it.

It does and it doesn't ... I have sought many mainstream avenues. While I was successful with some, the ads have to be softcore and thus draw in less clicks. One had to be REALLY softcore and it had to use the term "adult" to tell people that they were going a pornsite. Then they have to send to the landing page.

Other areas I thought would work well, their companies don't allow "pornography." It's frustrating, people just won't take your money anymore.

I think it would do real well but the problem is all the high paying companies out there won't touch your site if you got adult related links on it.

So you can kiss MGM, Capitol, Nike potential ad deals good bye if you start promoting adult sites on your mainstream site.

this would be that whole "it works great for adult.

I agree with BoyAlley. I think its possible, but it would probably work best if it was some sort of half and half or borderline site. Something that can be seen as both Adult or fairly mainstream, depending on interpretation.

I personally love mainstream but I'd rather market mainstream products on mainstream sites. Like 12clicks said, there's a ton of barriers to entry when dealing with mainstream media.

Sure, and well noted on the barriers of entry.

But lets say those barriers go to the wayside.

I'd say crossover products like dating which isn't explicitly adult but does strongly imply it would do best, like AFF, lavalife, sunset media/whatever else you see out there on late night tv.

The exception to the rule is the nonstop Girls Gone Wild ads I see on not-so-latenight tv.

It comes to my attention that many adult site webmasters are afraid to try new venues of advertisement outside the usual. Take the site in my sig for example, LOTS of people say it's a great idea, but many are afraid to advertise on it unless there's lots of other big names on it.

I say there's plenty of room out there for adult ventures beyond linktrades and banners on other porn sites. I think mainstream advertisers need to chill out with the paranoia that their Nike ads can't exist anywhere on the same domain as a tittysite.

I don't think it is mainstream advertisers that are the issue. The issue is one that is engrained and not isolated to the Web.

It's called zoning : )

Now the web has it just like communities have it. You can't just put a strip club anywhere you want. If you do, the houses lose value.

Speaking of Girls Gone Wild, we definitely have built a major business of mainstream and are attempting to duplicate those efforts on the net. THere are quite a few barriers you run into. Mainly, most companies with major investors or venture capital firms dont want any relation to adult. For every 3 people that pick up your ads, 1 turns them down.

The mainstream affiliate market is a different beast altogether since it is set up as a marketplace almost. Affiliates pick up the ad if they want it, mainstream or adult. People that may turn you down in one companies division will forward your info to another more "secret" division. Case in point... AdBrite - AVN Ads, Burst Media - Burst Direct, AOL - Searchboxxx, Right Media - REmix Media, etc

All creative definitely has to be clean so lower click thrus. It is also more expensive to try to buy mainstream traffic and back it into your CPA then it is with adult. If you run the numbers on your avg conversion % you will see that you cant really afford to pay that much on a CPM/CPC basis at times.

Hopefully this is helpful. Hit me up on ICQ if you need anymore info.

Well done, Lubna.

And speaking of mainstream and semi-adult (and adult) we're buying. As Cory poined out we're moving in a new direction but we're also buying.

P.S. who the Sam Hill is girls gone wild?

Feel free to hit me up or to set up a time to talk in PHX to exchange some notes and see if we can beat some of these mainstream companies at their own game.

p.s. I am not sure but I have a box of videos in my office if you are interested in finding out.

I wouldn't waste mainstream traffic with adult. It's too valuable and doesn't convert like a TGP gallery.

Cory...

If you are speaking of CC offers, finance & that type of product...It does not fare well. It's the traffic... and the traffic has a mindset I feel. Adult traffic is looking to get off...not to get a CC or similar.

Having been on the adult side, and now in mainstream, I would be happy to answer any questions you have.

Just hit me up on ICQ

adult dating kicks ass in mainstream. we run a couple well known sites. adult products like pills/supplements to get you off better or stay hard longer do really well also. toys do alright, ask Dave bout that. i don't think any of the other categories do to much though.

The variety of clients we have often help each other with ad buying, often times if one is accepted in a medium, it helps to open the door (be it often just a tad bit more) so we can squeeze in other "adult related" products. Print has been a lot more receptive, followed by radio. The street level events have been the most effective and the receptiveness of the audience a lot more reassuring.
