Last Minute Bidder is the best software approach I've found to handle sniping, though the web-based ones seem to work better than it.

How do they make money? I'm always suspicious of services that are free, without obvious way of making $$... :-/

I've been using http://www.esnipe.com for a few years now. It's an excellent website that's won me many auctions. They even offer a 14-day free trial if you'd like to give them a try. The nice thing about Esnipe is that it's NOT a downloaded program, it's a website that does the bidding for you from their servers.

After the trial, you just buy points, one point per dollar bid, which equals out to 1% of the bidding amount. Still, I think this is very cheap. To make a $100 bid, it only costs you $1. I think that with the snipe, you'll save more than that Also, they're not picky on points, if you forget to add some, they'll still bid for ya, so you don't miss out.

Also, they have neat thing called "bid groups" which is nice. Say you want to buy a Nintendo Wii for say $280. Well, you could put in multiple auctions and your price and it'll bid on them until it wins one, then it'll cancel out the rest of the bids.

DEFINATELY give Esnipe a try !!!
