great discussion! I don't really have much to add other than to read this if you are just getting started with blog optimization.. (taken from top rank blog. com)

Consider keywords when writing your blog post titles. Some blog software allows plugins that can suggest keywords. Otherwise, you can use Google Suggest or one of these free keyword suggestion tools: Digital Point, SEO Book or Google AdWords Keyword Tool. Keywords should NOT determine your content (unless it’s an AdSense blog).
Optimize the template. Make sure post titles appear in the title tag and append the title tag (hard code) with the most important phrase for your blog.

Example: ” Interview with Brett Tabke - Online Marketing Blog“
Online Marketing Blog is included on every blog post title tag automatically.

Also use the blog post title as the permalink. If you’re using keywords in the blog post title, then they will occur as anchor text in the permanent post link. While you’re at it, just make the post title a permalink.

I'm currently using the post title as a permalink, and I'm making sure the post title contains keywords or the phrase that I'm targeting in that particular post.

I recently changed the TITLE format for each page. The default in WordPress uses the name of the blog >> post title or some variation thereof. I'm using the Optimal Title plugin that you can find here:

http://elasticdog.com/2004/09/optimal-title/

I am using the post title separated by a ·, and then the blog name at the end as a more effective means of a title. I wonder if down the road I'll just leave off the name of the blog all together in the title tag; but for now, I'll leave it be and see how much better this does over the default WordPress title.

If you want to embed video into your blog, this plugin makes it a little bit easier:

I hope that in 4.0 they add the functionality for MySpace videos. Their example shows it works for MySpace but on my blog, the MySpace button did not appear when writing a post.

If you want to see what people are searching for within your blog, here is a Search Meter plugin that will track all of your recent searches. It also tells you the number of results found. This is a great tool for monitoring your traffic's success in searching within your site. You may find they are looking for something that isn't there.

The Google SiteMaps plug in seems to be working well. I get indexed MUCH faster now:

AutoMeta: Automatically inserts a keyword meta tag into your post. This seems to help, but I must admit I did a number of changes while adding this feature, so I can't say exactly how much of my blog's success relies on this plugin alone.

Related Posts Plugin: I like this because it finds relevant posts and then puts links to them from the new post. My thought is that by adding more direct links to specific posts (permalinks), I should be helping those pages get indexed a tad faster.

Don't forget you'll need to add something like this into your single.php file, presumabley towards the end of the post:

Code:

Related Posts:
<?php related_posts(); ?>

If anyone can recommend any other plugins that assist with SEO or anything else practical for a blog, please post it here. Thanks!

The biggy, which helps not only with the search engines, by giving them more routes to dig around in your site, but also works for surfers, is Ultimate Tag Warrior.

And once you have this on board, there are several plugins which use its data to help with titles, metas, etc.

One thing to bear in mind is that all these plugins carry a server overhead. That is worthwhile if your blog is basically SE-friendly, but if you are running something which is a TGP with a different skin, you will be wasting your time. And don't expect miracles, because ultimately your content itself and inbound links (from the "right" places, which as some have implied, are very rare in adult) have the major impact.

Looks like a good plugin. I also like the SEO Title Plugin, I'm going to give that a shot too. I like how that one lets you modify each post's title individually.

Hey MikeB

You might want to test your server, your sites are loading really really slow for me.

MikeB 03-02-2007 04:06 PM

It is loading fast here. I pinged you on ICQ but no reply.

Anyone using 2.1.1 should update to 2.1.2, they had a bad security issue.

A good technique I have used for getting my page indexed competitively, is not so much about "how many posts per page" ... but quantity/quality/etc of on-page & off-page factors.

By analyzing the top 10-20 results in the serps for a given niche/keyword... you can tailor your quantity/quality/etc to fall into the same.

There are a ton of tools that will do this for you, personally I use Ranking Spy to evaluate the top competitors for the niche I am targeting... then I format my page to fall into a similar keyword-density/linking layout.

In other words...
  • serp result #1 for "midget shoes" has 20 outbound links & 100 internal links with the term "midget shoes" accounting for 5% of the total on-page word content.
  • While serp result #10 for "midget shoes" has 50 outbound links & 120 internal links with "midget shoes" accounting for 10% of the total on-page word content.

I will use this data to format my sites layout. I will analyze my site with RS having 10 posts per page... then 8 per page.. then 5 .. etc.. etc.. until my site has "midget shoes" accounting for between 5-10% of the on-page word content.

I will also adjust my links accordingly so that I have between 10-50 outbound & 100-120 internal.

With this kind of an evaluation of your page vs. your competitors you can answer the question for yourself.

10 posts per page works well for me.

To minimize dup content (visa vis tag/category pages) I don't put the entire post in the main page - use the [more] separator to show only the introduction to the post. This way, the main pages are unique with lots of relevant text and the expanded posts are large enough that they don't conflict with the "pre-more" text.

Don't get greedy with tags, and be sure to actually use the keywords you tag in the "pre-more" text.

I have blogs which don't have any inbound blogroll links and they get daily SE traffic (G,Y,M).

Also tweek your WP scripts to reverse the titles so that the blog post title appears before the blog title. There are plugins which do this - I rewrote the code myself and also ensured that the DESCR tag and ROBOTS directives appeared correctly in the header.

The key is actual original coherent content. One post per blog per day.
