Several auditions are conducted prior to anyone getting to the TV taping.
So basically many good singers/acts are over-looked in order to put on contrived bad acts that the judges and public can ridicule.
Of the talent left at the end, most do not write their own music. Instead they are signed to contracts by the producers to go out on American Idol tours, etc.
American Idol is the best of the bad old days of music where the labels totally controlled the artists. The result is homogenized bland acts where style triumphs over substance.
No wonder the public eats it up...
