Good question. Even if they can get DNA from these bones, how are they going to compare that DNA to Jesus? I was not aware of any DNA that he left behind. Those bones could be anyone's.

It depends on the condition of the bones. If they can not get a proper dna sample, they can try to get a mitochondrial dna sample. It is not always possible to get any dna from bones.

i watched this documentary and thought it was very interesting. of course no one is saying "we know with 100% certainty that these are the remains of Jesus and Mary and their family". it seemed that the evidence was pretty compelling and convincing as the mathematician was pointing out all the evidence pointing to the possibility of the ossuaries containing the bones of Jesus, mary, his brother and child and the mathematical probabilities. the circumstances alone and the archeological evidence add a lot of weight to the idea that it is a very strong possibility.

and who cares? it won't affect christianity at all. "faith" is exactly that... "Faith". otherwise religion would be celebrating "Fact". they will just argue that his soul left his body and thats what was wrote about in the gospels. besides, its been proven time and time again in studies that disproving the foundations of any belieft system where people dedicate their lives to, usually are strengthened by proof that its bullshit.. not weakened. look at seventh day adventists... they gave up everything and sat patiently waiting for the world to end on a very specific time and date... once it did not happen, they only grew stronger. its much easier for people to rationalize their behavior and decisions which have become who they are, and carry on, living with the comfort that it offers, than it is to suddenly lose those beliefs and the security they offer as well as all that you have devoted to it.

I disagree in part with what your saying here. *If* it can be proven that the mortal remains of JC are still with us then it throws into disaray one of the fundamental tenents of Christianity in that JC bodily ascended to heaven after his resurection. Secondly, ( and probably more importantly ), it would give us a starting point to begin a more thourough and scientific investigation of the real man behind the myth.

However I would agree that there are allways going to be some that will choose to disregard any amount of evidence that calls their belifes and dogma's into question.

Are you for real or just a fake board personality? Seriously... A right wing, flag waving, bible thumper on an adult webmaster board? Seems fishy.

personally, i doubt it would have ANY impact. Seventh Day Adventists gave up all their possessions believing the world would end in 1844. Mormons believe absolutely moronic things like the "fact" that native american indians are actually descendants from hebrews, in spite of the fact that its an impossibility. Jehovas Witnesses believe that dinasours never existed in spite of the obvious modern evidence to the contrary. Scientology, founding by a well known scam artist and convicted felon, teaches that an alien creature 75,000,000 years ago, brought billions of other alien creatures to die here on earth adn their souls are in our bodies causing any and all negative thoughts, feelings and emotions we have. Sun Myung Moon, convicted felon built a mulit billion dollar empire owning companies that were major defense contractors to major players in the global seafood industry by telling people he was the returning messiah until he died... at which point his son then of course, became the returning messiah. the list goes on. most religions are based on absolute absurdities that were easily disproven at one point or another. it never has any negative impact on their following or strength.

Yes but there's a fundamental danger here in comparing the ideologies of mainstream Christianity with some of the more obscure religious sects. If you add together all the followers of these religious sects and the overall credibility of their dogma's & ideologies in the general public's perception and compare it to those of mainstream Christianity then I'd say that Christianity outweights them by a huge margin and as a result of that huge disparity flaws that could be discovered in Christain dogma & ideology would have a larger and more far reaching effect to the public in general.

even then, flaws, contradictions and impossibilities are all over the place and abundant in the bible. even the concept of hell wasn't even a part of christianity and was added by the church. it was invented and injected into the bible because they needed a boogeyman to boost church membership. today its a fact in christianity.. there is a hell. you will burn forever if you do not follow gods law and accept jesus christ as your savior. followers do not question this.

the total net effect of all of christianities flaws and impossibilities and contradictions and murderous rampages in the name of peace and love.... christianity = the largest religion on the planet.

i believe that thinking that proving jesus was buried with his wife is going to change christianity is like suggesting that after having your whole family die in a plane crash, you will suddenly change your beliefs in what happened after death (they went to heaven etc) because someone had "proved" there is no heaven or maybe because they had "proven" that there was in fact an afterlife and its nothing but misery and suffering and you will never see your loved ones again.

any sane person would reject those notions reflexively and protect the reality they created to give themselves comfort and help them cope.

faith has nothing to do with fact. neither does religion. its about comfort, sense of purpose in life and security. people believe because it makes them feel better... not because it can be proven to be fact. the arguments of theology are nothing more than theatrics to rationalize an absurd belief system.

Yeup and yeup, and I suspect that in time more of those flaws and contradictions are going to be scrutinized and proven false to the point where, /*me sticks neck right out on block*/, Mr Nostradamus could be proven correct
