Networking help needed - GoFuckYourself.com

Hi there,

wondering if anyone can help. We recently found out our IBM can't be networked with any other pc except another IBM.

We still have hope that we can network our Compaq Desktop running Windows XP and our other PC running Windows 98SE.

We have a hub and are still having problems. Wld greatly appreciate any advice.

Why should you be able to connect an IBM to any other machine via hub ?

At home I have one Win98 machine, one Linux box, one Win2k and one WinXP machine hanging on one router, whose DHCP assigns individual IPs to each machine... don't see why an IBM should have trouble with that...

may b your hub is 10mbs and the networkcard on the ibm is 100 mbs and not able to switch automaticly to 10 ?

Hmm, I am no pro but I've worked in a computer firm for quite a while. Just check, what network card is in the IBM pc.

From my experience, IBM PCs have those nasty Token Ring cards installed which can only be switched together to a Token Ring network and that could be why you can connect 2 IBM PCs together and not the IBM <=> Compaq version.

The problem you're going to end up having if you want to do file sharing is getting all of your security right between 98 and XP. Which machine do you want to share on what or do you want to share both drives with each other? Are you doing this just to share an internet connection?

I'm with the others on the IBM issue, there's no way someone can tell you it can only be networked with another IBM unless it is running some IBM proprietary OS. Most likely as the others said it has a token ring card in it, just yank it and install a 10/100 Ethernet card and you'll be set.

my wife is running 98SE on her PC and she is on cable. My IBM's o/s is Windows ME and I am on dial-up. The Compaq lappie is running XP.

We wld like to have all files shared on all computers and have them all running off the cable connection.

The IBM is running IBM proprietary OS.

We just bought Sygate Home Networking software half an hour ago.

Actually bro you'd be alot happier if you bought a linksys or similar cable router, you're not going to care for sygate much as you have to keep the PC running it on and operational at all times and that PC is still fully connected to the internet. If you'll get a cable router that "essentially" puts all machines behind somewhat of a firewall and keeps them mostly safe. Besides it's much easier to use than a software router.

I've setup a hundred of these if you need a bit of help, but I think you'd be much happier with it and they are very cost effective.

Note, the cable router is also a 4 port hub, as well if you grow out of that you can uplink another hub to it, and so on and so forth, so I think in the end you could network 253 or so machines through that one little 65.00 router

If you do that in your home I wanna see pictures LOL
