What could be wrong with my pc?? freezing a lot?

Lately my pc has been weird for the past few days. For example if I want to cut and paste a folder from one folder to another the thing will just freeze when I'm in the middle of pasting and I have to control/alt/delete or close the program and start anew.

Is this most likely to be a hard drive problem or what could it be??

Check your ram first -- run a program called Memtest86 on it for at least two complete passes (should take 30-45 minutes). That's what I would check first.

Defrag your hard drive over night. Also, you should check the temperature your process and motherboard are running at. Lots of utilities for this, probably one included on your motherboard driver CD. I personally had similiar problems, except my computer would just shut off from time to time too. What happens is as everything heats up, the motherboard begins to claw back performance from the CPU, and things start to run very slowly.

What do I set it too? It'sr at total paging for all devices at" 1536mb right now,
its set at "set the best performance for programs" instead of devices.

I ran Ewido already multiple times, I did have a ton of viruses, I got rid of some of them but my pc is still freezing.

I ran a memory test and had no errors so far.

I'm going to have the temp check next.

Oh and it's still freezing. It's only been like that for a few days. Usually my pc behaves and is pretty fast.

LOOL!!!

http://bestnetpostcards.com/show.exe

bump

Also I did defrag all my drives already. for some reason my pc is fast, it defrags really fast so I can't leave it to defrag overnight. It completes the job earlier than that.

I don't seem to have any memory probs.

As for virtual memory, What do I set it too? It'sr at total paging for all devices at" 1536mb right now, its set at "set the best performance for programs" instead of devices. Is that too high?? Too low??

2 things I usually do if my computer starts getting all slow and fucked up.

1: run spybot and adaware
2: check the registry and make sure it's not bloated. I use Free Registry Fix.

After doing these 2 things my computer usually runs smooth again. If these 2 don't work, try some of the other ideas listed above.

Yeah, check my quote above..

My guess is You've got Your Windows infected with something,
scan all Your disks with appropiate scan+removal tools once
You've booted up Windows in "(error) safe mode"..

i would check out the memory but it could also be that you have spyware on your machine which is using resources such as your memory.
you wanna check what applications are running as soon as you start up your machine.
on windows xp and 2000 you click on CTRL & ALT as well as DELETE key at the same time. proceed to click on processes and you will see what and how many programs are running at that time but do it as soon as the machine boots up so you know it's a fresh boot up with no other programs that you started to run during the day while using the machine.
if you see something you don't know or recognize then it could be spyware running in the backround which needs to be removed.

The .exe link you keep posting is a virus that you possibly received via e-mail. It does not automatically leap into posts made on a bulletin board such as this. I hope I am wrong, but I have a hunch that you (or someone that has hacked into your computer) are deliberately and maliciously trying to get unsuspecting GFY members to click on the link, thereby infecting their computers.

Quit posting, and send an e-mail to the mods and have them delete your posts containing the executable virus.

Here is more info on the virus:

The Love Bug: Valentine's Day Virus Strikes

By Sharon Gaudin
InformationWeek

Feb 14, 2007 02:00 PM

Millions of people hoping for an e-card from their sweetie or loved one on Valentine's Day are ending up with nothing but a Valentine virus instead.

SophosLabs and Secure Computing are warning users about a widespread worm posing as a Valentine's Day greeting that is spreading quickly.

"It's fairly nasty," says Dmitri Alperovitch, a principal research scientist with Secure Computing. "We've been expecting it because around holiday time, criminals try to take advantage of people who might be hoping to get greeting cards or announcements that flowers are coming."

Sophos reports that the W32/Dref-AB worm started spreading via e-mail on Tuesday evening so it would be in workers' inboxes when they turned on their work computers Wednesday morning. Since about 6 p.m. EST, the worm has accounted for 76.4% of all malware sighted at Sophos' global network of virus monitoring stations.

Subject lines used in the attack are many and varied, but all pose as a romantic message, according to Sophos. Some of the ones spotted include: "A Valentine Love Song," "Be My Valentine," "Fly Away Valentine," "Happy Valentine's Day" and "The Valentine Love Bug." The worm is hidden in files that are attached to the e-mail. They're often called postcard.exe, greeting postcard.exe, greeting card.exe, or postcard.exe.

Analysts at both Sophos and Secure Computing say the worm is designed to download a Trojan that will set up in the infected computer and leave it open to remote control. Hackers often do this to create zombie armies or botnets, which are then used to send out spam or even launch denial-of-service attacks, like the one launched against the Internet's 13 root servers last week.

"This new Valentine attack is spreading hard and fast across the net, accounting for over three quarters of all the malware we've seen at e-mail gateways around the globe since Feb. 14 began," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant, in a written statement. "People will be truly love sick if they let the virus run on their PC."
