Most of it probably is. Weird setup to say the least.

I was invited (my uncle was a big grand poobah type) and was one for, oh, about 5 minutes in the scheme of things MANY years ago.

If your buddy is spouting about it all he won't last long. Their code of the mafia like "Omerta" is legendary. He will last 10 seconds if found out.

The rules I live by are my own, that's why I walked.

Back when I worked in telco as a business outside sales rep I met with the free masons about their phone service. Received the tour and some lore. To sum it all up in a word...

creepy.

I caught some show on the History Channel a few months back. It was informative as to how, and why this society exists even today. But still summed up in the same word above.

the freemasons have an interesting history. Check out the book " The Hyram Key " it was written by a couple of masons, and will spread some light on them, as well as some interesting things about the bible.

Freemasons are like any other fringe group you see in the world today. Some chapters are made up of very powerful people who use the masons as their meeting and collaborating point. Others are innefective groups of, well, losers, who simply want to belong.

They have nowhere near the power they used to have. When mass communications became available to the masses, the closed door meetings between smallish groups of influential people fell by the wayside..

For most chapters it's more like a private club. For a few, they still have a strong power base. In aggragate, they aren't very powerful except as a voting block - much like any other voting block.

Don't know much of anything... however the Freemasons were born out of the stone masons, such being many... community gatherings... of different societies with inner and outer circles, with the outer most protecting the inners. Such levels had colors assigned to them. Black being the most outer, and white being the most inner... There were many different groups of the stone masons, however they all had different politics in the different regions and could not really be said to be one group.

Now the Freemasons seem to be a community driven group, however they seem to have their own social trade system that over laps public ones... and they seem to want to keep old "keys" and or new "keys" to certain doors like influence or finances for those who they see fit as to continue certain objectives... This does not mean bad things, just hidden trade and influence...

Now this is just a wild guess...
