GeForce 8800 GTX - worth it?

Anyone have one of these? Seems pretty slick. Feedback appreciated.

Thanks,

JM

I've heard Yes because the 8800's are the only cards out supporting directx10. (so far?)

ztik,

What would sli'ing them (what's SLI?) benefit me? Also, I've only got one PCI-e slot in here, not even an AGP slot to put another card in, otherwise I'd love to set up 4 monitors on this rig.

I have one. Its nice. I guess if its work $600 depends on how much loot you make. Mine is 11" long. Make sure you have room in your case......

Not really worth it yet. You won't see any real benefit from having them for a few months but it's always good to 'future-protect' yourself. I'm waiting for the next gen in cards... supposedly they are going to use much less power than the 8800 beasts do right now.

Seems like a waste unless you are some sort of super-elite gamer. I always buy the generation before the latest thing, but I guess maybe I am just thrifty (i.e. a cheap bastard).

Lol, you don't have an 8800. That's a year's wages where you live.

Whats the minimum processor you'd need to avoid a processor bottleneck with dual 8800's? Something will always be a bottleneck in a sense, but what is recommended?

Thanks for the info guys! Problem is this freakin DELL has a 305 watt PSU in it apparently. Can't even handle one card, let alone two. I'd upgrade it, but i'm not sure what type of PSU i'd need for this MOBO and such.

I'd recommend at least a 700-watt power supply that is quad rail with 18A per rail. Depending on your CPU though you may have to get an even better PSU.

Pentium-D 2.79 Ghz, 3 GB RAM, Dell Dimension Desktop E500 or some such. Anyone know which PSU I could safely swap this POS with so I can get a good vid card in here that actually works properly? I've read on forums that even this ATI Radeon X600 won't do well with a 300 watt PSU.

Update:

Dell just told me the system can't handle anything above 300 Watts. How nice, when I paid extra for the video card upgrade on the ATI. When I told them this, they said it's not a heavy gaming system so it wasn't shipped with more than 300 Watts. The issue is ATI and several tech forums state the minimum PSU requirements of which this system doesn't meet, and was configured by Dell and shipped regardless of this simple fact. Gotta love Dell, I think this is strike #7 between me and them. My business is going to Alienware from now on.

Dude that sucks. I bought the video card not knowing how much power it pulled. Well I had to replace my power supply and hard drive. I think my card was defective, the fan went out on it as well. Would make a loud ticking sound. Now I know to always make sure that certain add-ons are compatible with my pc's.

Can't you just slap in a new power supply, or are they using some sort of proprietary piece of crap?

Nah, it's just that the motherboard itself can't handle that much juice.
