Back everything up! IF it starts failing use the freezer trick and then back everything and throw that HD in the garbage.

Damn I hate when that happens. Snap to it while there's time to salvage.

If your data is important then don't wait, buy (or borrow) a HD and copy everything... or upload it to your web server...

woj: the freezer trick will sometimes free up heads that have stuck to the platter. You put the drive into the freezer for 10 mins and then hope it works. It's a last resort.

Remove the drive and put it in the freezer over night. The cold will make the metal contract so if the issue was that the head mechanism was stuck it may come loose so you can have a chance to get the data off. Not a perm fix but may give you the extra time to get the data backed up.

So did you get it all saved?

On my PC I have a RAID10 system plus a RAID0 system that stores backups. 6 drives sounds like overkill, but my data (and workstation availability) is important.

Wow!! Pretty impressive. So, how much information do you really have on your hardrives ? how many GB`s ?

                                  RAID10, 4 x 300Gb Seagata SATA = 558GB actual space
                                  RAID0, 2 x 320Gb Western Digital SATA = 596GB actual space

I store my photos in RAW format which is much larger than a jpeg (up to 20MB per image) so I need the space. My pics consume about 300GB at the moment.

I also have a 500GB drive in a carrier that usually stays in another room.

Ok, so maybe it is overkill... but short of a devastating fire my data is safe. Soon even that won't kill it since I'll have an offsite backup as well.

spray some WD-40 on it, it will help the discks spin
