What are your tips for breaking insomnia?

I am going on two days so far. Usually, if I hit two days, it leads to many more.

So tonight, I bought a bottle of white wine and have some Nyquil on the table. I am going to take one pill and have a liberal glass of wine just before bed.

What are your ways?

I hate it. Not even for the fact that it makes you feel drained all day, but more for being totally bored at night. I just lay there thinking and thinking and ......

I wouldn't drink the wine, it can wake you up more.

Are you stuck thinking?

Do you have a whitenoise player? Or try downloading a whitenoise loop file from somewhere and play it all night long.

What are you stuck thinking about / haven't made a decision on that you need to?

Make sure you get some exercise every day and make sure you get out of your office/home and spend some time in the natural light outdoors everyday as without that your body's melatonin production will slow down and that can play havoc with your body clock/sleeping patterns.

Wine can do that. I totally agree. But for some reason, a full glass of white wine and a sleeping pill are perfect.

Have you ever seen Fight Club? When Ed Norton has insomnia? That scene, that is me.

yea pipecrew...a few nyquils do the trick. 2 or 3 tylenol PMs even work for me...

Cory... smoke some trees along with some wine. The wine should help your heart plus if you drink enough you'll be out for sure eventually lol...

Make yourself a massive turkey sandwich and gobble it down with that glass of wine. Chase that with the nyquil, the herb and the sleeping pill and call me in the morning.

Artificial methods (pills and booze) tend to actually make it worse over time, and creates a certain mental dependance on them to get to sleep.

Consider the reason you don't sleep. Is your brain active? Are you awake because of unresolved issues, stress, or other outside forces? Your best bet in those cases may be to work hard on resolving those issues.

You can also do things that are mentally tiring, such as word puzzles, in order to make your brain as tired as your body surely is.

Don't just look for a cure though... trying to find your (real) source.

Melatonin helps me if I'm suffering from the occasional insomnia. Try one 1mg tablet and if you're still having trouble, try taking one more.

According to Newsweek® magazine -

"Melatonin is the all-natural nightcap. It's secreted by the pineal gland, a pea-size structure at the center of the brain, as our eyes register the fall of darkness.

"At night melatonin is produced to help our bodies regulate our sleep-wake cycles. The amount of it produced by our body seems to lessen as we get older. Scientists believe this may be why young people have less problem sleeping than older people.

"Studies suggest that... supplements can hasten sleep and ease jet lag, without the hazards or side effects of prescription sleeping pills."

It may have many other uses and has been reported to make people feel better, strengthen the immune system, and reduce free radicals in the body. Current research is underway to determine it's effect as an anti-oxidant, immno-modulator in cancer, delayed sleep-phase disorders, and jet lag. Tests are still under way so there is much to still be learned about it and its effects on the human body. Travelers and people suffering from mild sleep disorders.

According to the article, a typical comment from discussion groups on the Internet is, "'Folks, I've tried it and it's great. It has ...restored my sleep cycle, given me lots of energy.'" (6 Nov. 1995, p. 60-63)

Things to try are make sure all light-sources are off / blocked from outside windows, or even LED lights on things that are unplugged; unplug everything in the room, and for alarm clock move it at least 5 feet away from your head, and have the time display not facing you. Slightest amount of noise and sound can cause brain to not think it's night time yet / not time to sleep. The suggestion for doing a crossword puzzle is good, thogh crossword puzzles aren't all that brain activating if you don't have a big vocabulary, just end up being frustrating. One thing to keep in mind, you can't 'stop' yourself from thinking, but you can change what you're thinking about... meditation is basically exactly that as well..

Yep, but don't miss the sleep window. I have done that before...taken it and then got a phone call for work and talked for 15 to 30 minutes.

Then you are screwed.

Dave,

It is strange. It comes in waves. Sometimes I go months where I sleep a full 8 hours a night. Then suddenly comes a streak of insomnia.

It is odd. I get super creative while it goes on. I think of great ideas while laying in bed. And of course, I get frustrated.

The longer I go without sleep, it is like the more my body forgets how to sleep.

Getting into a routine of not being on computer and letting your brain slow doing something 'routine' to get into an automated mood/state before you lay down is a really good thing too. Eg: Turn off computer, unplug everything. Brush your teeth. Get your bed ready to lay down in. Go to bathroom, pee if ya need. Put on whatever your night clothing are, or strip down if ya sleep nude... a possibility is the fabric of your bedsheets, or your nighttime clothing, or as well possibly whatever detergent you wash them with.

Once you have done everything in your routine you know you're done it and ready to go to bed. So go lay down, get comfy in the covers once, shift to a side if ya do that, and if any thoughts come up realize and know that it's your bedtime / sleep time and your brain will remind you tomorrow about them, and you can let them go/disappear, they will come back to you tomorrow.

I know, I go through it all the time.

All the regular BS doesn't work, Stay off your computer one hour before bed, don't lay in bed for anything besides sleeping, take a bath, shoot a load, read a book. All BS for Insomnia in most cases.
We think a lot and we can't just shut of our minds. We operate great all day and as soon as we close our eyes, our minds start racing. I know, it's crazy.

They have some super techniques where you can learn to control your mind. I have tried it with no luck, people say yoga works and working out in the AM, that gets my physically tired but never mentally.

I think the more we talk about the problem the more it stays within us.

Don't take sleeping pills or you will be addicted and will never be able to get off them.

If we can put our minds to do anything like you and I have accomplished, eventually this Insomnia problem will go along with that. (Hopefully)

If you find a solution, please pass it on.

Nature's Plus Sleep Assure is Awesome - trust me, I used to have awful insomnia.

xanax works great too but has horrible side effects, so I would go with the natural

How is your knee feeling? If it's all healed up I would suggest that you go for a run before bedtime. It should work and even if it doesn't you get in better shape. Hope that you can find a way to get over it.

The problem with you is probably that you worked hard and had a big tension and can't relax and fall asleep. So you have to think of your time sleep more. Pay more attention to relax, like warm bath , a cup of wine (what you already did) reading a book.

I was looking at Midget Army a couple weeks back and trying to figure out how you had time to build and update it, along with regular work, shows, personal life, etc... I was thinking to myself "does this guy ever fucking sleep?"

i would go running or workout in the afternoon..if you do that consistently and stick to a routine, your sleeping patterns should fall in place.

Grab some melatonin as others has suggested. Should be able to find it at any grocery or drug store.

Weed, wine, ambien, diphenhydramine, sex. Combine any 2 or 3 of those and you should be good to go.
