Why would anyone in this world want to shop at walmart?

The way DUMB people think....
Wow Walmart has great prices lets go shop there. Wow these shirts, boxers and socks are 1/2 the price than all the other stores, maybe I'll even buy two of each since they are 1/2 the price. 3 weeks later.... 7 out of 10 pairs of socks have holes in them, both your boxers do to and lets not even get started on the undershirts so what do you do? You go back to the same walmart so your broke dumb ass can buy some more shitty stuff thats going to need to be replaced again and again.

The way smart people think....
They go to a good old store at the mall or anywhere besides ghetto ass walmart and buy socks, undershirts, boxers etc... and they will probably last until your throw them out someday.

Point of my story:
I guess the point is Walmrt sure is good at ripping off the dumb consumer.

and dont say well they have cheap Milk or soap or something because it seems like every product they have has somehow had its quality compromised in order to be cheap enough to get on the walmart shelves.

When health care and other low income aid ... paid for by taxes ... is distribuited to their underpaid employees ... have you really saved anything?

As a former Wal-Mart vendor, I can tell you that there was constant pressure to skip steps and make things generally shittier to reduce the price. They sold out to manufacturers in China, etc. When Sam was alive, he didn't go for that shit. We did millions a year in business for OVER A DECADE with them, and they sold us out for China like yesterday's trash.

The only thing that's a "deal" at Wal-Mart is the pre-boxed stuff, like MikeSmoke said, the cereal, etc. It's identical, just cheaper.

But still -- I wouldn't shop there, fuck that.

if you buy name brand stuff its all the same no matter where you go. walmart works because they can offer name brands cheaper and you don't have to stop at 5 different stores to get what you need.

There is some truth to that...however you're paying those taxes for those things whether you shop at Wal-Mart or not.
So why pay taxes to subsidize Wal-Mart and then go to another store and pay more.

edgeprod already hit on this - Walmart are one of the main core reasons for other economic problems with the US overall. The rate they ship in foreign product from other countries (mainly China) knocks the hell out of trade balances.

Product may be cheap for customers, but it's not cheap for USA Inc - the real cost is being paid at another level in loss of manufacturing base within the US and also in trade deficits.

I can buy a new release DVD there for $15 instead of paying $20+ at blockbuster for it.
Same thing goes for ipod accessories, aspirin, tons of products that are identical to what you buy elsewhere, just cheaper at Wal-Mart.

I'm guessing you got a bad deal on some socks and are venting now?

That's populist and not entirely accurate.

We have an unemployment rate in the U.S. of less than 5%. We don't have enough people in this country to manufacture all of the goods that we consume.
If the manufacturing jobs hadn't gone overseas then we wouldn't have had the human capital to fuel the information economy. If call centers etc aren't sent overseas now we won't have the human capital to create the next big economic wave.

It's what's known as creative destruction, and it's necessary for economic growth.

Not got stats handy, but agree - there is that aspect.

Tho another angle in that consumption is stupid high in relation to population with only 5% of the worlds population, but consuming at a rate of 25%. This is fine for developing nations where industries are being created, but a heavy financial burden trying to get a balanced fiscal policy in the US.

Tho.. the US is not alone in this - it's not uncommon in several "western" countries - the "economic powerhouse" has just shifted eastwards.

I don't know if you guys ever watch Frontline on PBS, but they did a show on WalMart and it's effects on America which can viewed online.
It's a great watch, shows how Wal Mart turned its suppliers into price takers and put a lot of them out of business and then forced the rest to move to China in order to compete.

I usually do not shop at Walmart period because I would much rather give money to the local stores here. The only time I went to walmart was to buy PS3's and Wii's. For everything else I try to support local businesses... it is true though that walmart has ultimate convenience, they have fucking everything in that damn store.

see, living in a smaller town we don't have local stores anymore...walmart ran everything off

we do actually drive a bit further lately just shop somewhere other than walmart, mainly because walmart has become the ghetto wonderland for hispanics....and nothing against the hispanic race, but they are some rude fucking people...not all of them, but the class of them that shop at walmart

My closest WalMart is 18km away, and I'm incredibly happy about that. I went there once last year to do shopping for Christmas decorations and gifts and haven't been back since. I'll say this much: Canadian WalMarts aren't that much different than American ones.
