Does anyone know how to unlock a cell phone for.......

.........another cell phone provider?

I got a new cell phone and I sold my old phone to a kid. The phone is no longer under contract or anything, but I use Sprint and he wants to use Cingular for the phone he bought from me.

Does anyone here know how you unlock a phone to so it can be used by another cell phone service provider?

Open back cover, remove battery, remove simcard. Insert new simcard, replace battery, replace cover.

Thank you for the advice and I will try it out when I get the phone in my hands.

Sprint is CDMA and Cingular is GSM so that may be an issue.

A Sprint phone won't work on a Cingular network. Unlocking it will make no difference.

Yeah you can't use a Sprint phone on any other network. They make them so you can't unlock it. No SIM card either. You're stuck with a CDMA phone. Sell it!

This is the correct answer.

It would be easier for him to cancel his Cingular and go with Sprint.

Verizon and Sprint are CDMA. No experience with taking a CDMA phone between carriers, just GSM..

T-mobile and Cingular are GSM as was pointed out.

I had Sprint for a couple years.. I think it's the sux0rs.

Would you happen to know how to make my canadian phone work with my US simcard when I'm in the US? **tried just switching the sim card and it don't work**
Rogers AT&T is the Canadian Carrier
T-Mobile is the US carrier

*#*#1234#, then hit the Call button. you get a message that says SIM Unlocked. not sure if it will work for you as it unlocks the phone but not sure if it will do the the same for the carrier ID.

-Turn the phone off

- while holding down 2, 6, 8, 3 and 5, turn the phone back on

-let phone completely boot up and then release the 6 and 5 keys only

-while still holding the 2, 3, and 8 keys down, press the 4 key 2 times and wait for a long tone followed by 2 short tones

- now release the '2' key and while still holding the 3 and 8 keys place your free hand on your head and spin around 4 times in a counter-clockwise direction (be careful not to spin clockwise, as this can damage the phone's internal memory, deleting all your speed dial numbers!!)

- LAST STEP : place phone in RIGHT SLOT of toaster (the one marked "single slice only") and with darkness setting on the SECOND LIGHTEST setting, engage the toaster and wait for it to pop back up ...

Your phone should now be unlocked, and it will no longer work on the Sprint network.

You need to get the phone unlocked. Some carriers will do it after you have been with them for a certain amount of time. For Cingular (one of my carriers) it is 3 months. Call up and tell them it is for foreign travel.

Otherwise you can pick up an unlocked gsm phone that can be used with any gsm system depending on the band of the phone. I did this for my business travel to Europe and before I knew carriers would unlock phones. Two good sources for unlocked phones are:

www.myworldphone.com & www.tigerdirect.com

As mentioned earlier there are also some online and offline companies that can unlock certain phones. Just do a search on Google. Good luck.
