Fucking Vista !!
Well, I just tried to upgrade my system to Vista (I know stupid me, ha ha) and it went through and was doing it's steps, then it had to reboot, once it did, it gave me a BSOD (blue screen of death).
LUCKILY they were smart enough to incorporate into it that when you reboot, it'll give you the option to to back to your old OS or finish the install, so here I am back at XP. I used their compatability tool and it said that I could install it without any issues. I did have everything backed up everything, but I'm afraid to try it again, ha ha ha. |

Thanks, perhaps I'll give that a try then. I just hate going through and putting in all of my passwords and installing everything over again. I guess that if it makes things smoother than perhaps I should.

dont do it
I loaded vista last week tried it for 2 days and Ill tell yeah it really isnt worth the pain or discomfort of tring it out... 40 % of the drivers still dont work for things you may need and honestly there just isnt a reason to insall it yet... In fact i called falcon computer a couple weeks ago and they even suggest you NOT to install it yet... just my 2 cents but good luck if you decide to try again... Tom |

Well, I just was gonna let Vista whipe out my hard drive and install fresh, but the same exact thing happend. Maybe it's my computer trying to tell me that it doesn't want the upgrade, ha ha ha.
It kinda sucks though because I just dropped $159 on it. I wonder if it would've made a difference if I bought the full version. I know I'm looking for punishment here, but when something new comes out like this, it's hard to stay away, ha ha ha. |

I did the upgrade last week (xp -> vista business). Didn't have much problems with drivers or anything. The only 2 programs that didn't work anymore were Kaspersky Anti Virus and Outpost. So I installed a new version of KAV and use the standard Vista firewall untill Outpost has a version available that works with Vista.
For the rest I haven't run into any problems yet. |

hm, they advertise it as the safest version of Windows ever, so exactly what makes you think that's unsafe right now???? I think that a year from now it'll be less safer - just give the hackers time to find some flaws, I'd worry more about bugs n shit.... I think I might install it on one PC just to try it out |

Well, I'm not sure what's going on here. I was fortunate enough to have a good friend that works at the store that I bought the Vista from and since I didn't activate it with the key, he took it back and let me pay the difference for the full version.
To tell ya the truth, I don't see any difference at all between the full version and the upgrade, everything on the cd seems the same, the upgrade lets you do a fresh install and it backs up your XP files into a separate file (which is nice). I'm getting the same exact problem though, I'm not sure what the hell to do. It goes to reboot then boom, Blue screen of death, ha ha ha. I did notice the error it gave me and did some research on it, but i can't find any cures for it. I get this error - PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA Who knows, I guess I just won't install it then |

I tried Vista a little but there's too many applications that aren't compatible with it so I switched back. Looks pretty...
Only used it for a few days, didn't notice anything too great about it. It's like XP with some addons to make it look like Mac.

After you're done buying a computer powerful enough and with enough RAM to run Vista, you might as well spent the extra $100 and bought a Mac.

Vista is a pretty rocking OS. I just had some training on Vista recently and to be 100% honest... don't bother to upgrade until mid 2007. Manufacturers have no drivers ready, software tittles are not all ready, even major companies like HP have ZERO Vista drivers yet. Only their factory installed PC's have proper drivers. A lot of companies are the same way.
The different versions of Vista are ridiculous too. There's over a half dozen versions now with many varying degrees of features. The new Office application bundle has changed too. They are also charging a yearly fee for 'Live' integration. Choose what you need wisely then wait until all your hardware is supported by the OS, the manufacturers have released non-beta drivers and all the initial bugs have been cleared from Vista. |

I tried ordering a Sony last week as well as trying to find one at Costco. Seems Costco was selling off their stock of XP's and Sony was upgrading as today there's no problem ordering from their site - with Vista on the notebook, of course.
I'm going to wait awhile and see how it's working on new computers before taking the plunge. |

I took a break from trying to install it, now I"m back.
Here's a rundown on how it goes. They want you to run the disk while you're in Windows, in both instances where it whipes the drive clean or doing an upgrade, it runs through and copies the files fine, but when it reboots and tries to continue the install process, I get a general "blue screen". When I try running the install fresh from a reboot (without doing it within windows first), it goes to a blank screen with a little line that moves, kinda like the XP line when you boot up, however it sits there. I did hear that it sometimes takes up to 20 minutes, so I let that sit there for over a half hour, the hard drive doesn't do anything, so I'm assuming it's not doing anything. After it does that, I reboot and let it go back into the install, then I get the page fault message. As far as my ram being bad, I have no problems in XP. I do have 4 gigs of ram though, so I'm not sure if that's why it's giving a problem ?? Other than that, my system is pretty powerful. I have an AMD FX60 CPU and 2 Nvidia Geforce 7900 GTXs SLI'd. When I ran the compatability, it said that the only problems were my sound card and video card, but they do all have Vista drivers, so I figured that I could just install them afterwards. I'm not sure what to do here, I guess I'll tinker around some more. |

Just so you guys know, if you buy/use the upgrade version of Vista, it requires XP or 2000 to be INSTALLED ALREADY.
So that means if you ever need to format, you first have to install XP or 2000 and then upgrade to Vista... They're pretty confident in Vista's disaster recovery Quote:
Have fun!

Well, I found out the problem, someone else was right, it was a ram issue. I'm not sure if there's a problem with my ram, but as a last resort, I ended up pulling out 3-gigs of the ram, leaving in only a single 1-gig stick and it's installing just fine. I'll wait for it to finish installing, then I'll try to get that ram back in there
One thing that I find interesting about the actual DVDs is that the dvds are exactly the same in the upgrade and full version kits, the only difference is the key that comes with it, which of course are upgrade and full version keys. |

Slick, there are sometimes some really weird issues with all windows software regarding the last 500 meg of memory or so. My current machine has 4 gigs ofram, but windows only seens 3.49 gig. There are issues about addressability and memory location overlays (a little too techie for me to be bothered figuring it out).
Windows has a "copy your system" utlity that allows you to make a backup of all your "stuff" to another hard drive, then go ahead with your upgrade, and then install all that stuff back at the end. I haven't tried it yet (I want to give vista a while to screw up first before I think about moving on). |

Looks like yahoo messanger is making vista crash and display the blue screen of death.
took me a few hours to get it narrowed down but that looks like the problem and yahoo does not have a vista compatable version available yet. so if your getting the blue screen and running yahoo msg'r stop using it and see if it fixes your problems |

From a die hard Mac fan, Vista looks interesting. My plan was to get a new Mac when Leopard came out. A Leopard/Vista dual booting Mac Pro would be sweet!

And I agree, fresh install only. I learned that after screwing up my PC with upgrading to XP. |
