Whats the best way to clear ice off a sidewalk (really hard ice)

I was on vacation and in vegas for 2-3 weeks. I come home and the fucking city tells me I have to clear my sidewalk or I have to pay a hefty fine.

There is ice about 4 layers thick that has covered my sidewalk entirely. I spent like an hour chipping away at it with an ice pick but I didnt even get 10% of it finished.

Whats the best way of clearing this shit up? I tried salt but it doesnt help at all

Guessing you used rock salt right?

Ok despite how crazy this is about to sound trust me. Get out your hose and run cold water over it. This will be the fastest way to remove it without pulling out a torch and possibly scorching the sidewalk and getting fined.

I have limited salt left, and its -15.. i think cold water will make it worse :/ (not enough salt to get it cleared up)

SidewalksUnder Traffic Bylaw #5590, it is the responsibility of the property owner to remove snow, ice and other debris from the sidewalk adjoining their property within 48 hours after a snowfall. Failing to comply with this bylaw may result in a fine of $85.00 and a bill to the property owner for the cost to clear the sidewalk. That's the biggest pile of bullshit i've read in a long time.

So what do they do, go round checking every damn household has cleared their sidewalk ?? Impossible !

I'd love to see them trying to give people fines for not doing so. No wonder they don't try to pull that shit here...

Calcium Chloride.

Its a bit more expensive than salt, but its much more effective at melting your ice and it won't damage your sidewalk or nearby plants.

It also works better at lower temperatures than salt.
