if they do not do gift cards in the US they have cards for travellers instead of travellers cheques that may work for you

Where are you?

In the UK you can buy pre-paid Visa and Mastercards in the shops these days - I am sure that you can in other Euro countries as well..

Just look for a shop that cashes checks and that sort of thing.
