I've been dealing with this tshirt issue for my whole career in entertainment. Everyone wants t shirts. T shirts are cool. But somehow I always ended up with dozens of shirts I didn't need. THAT's where you waste your money, not on shirts that are a dollar or two cheaper. This is why we like CafePress. Just in time inventory on T shirts is the way to go, unless you're stuffing goodie bags at a show and you need 2,000 on the same day.
Other thoughts for you:
1 - Porn t shirts. People love em, but don't wear em.
2 - Make sure shirts are high quality and good colors. I have two dozen t shirts in my closet I never wear for these reasons.
3 - Don't get anything but L and XL for men. More XL, a lot more.
4 - Don't get anything but M and L for women. More M, a lot more.
