Here's something to put this all in perspective

many of us are products of the computer age, especially alot of the younger webmasters i have met in the last 5 years or so.

how many of you programmed on a mac II se? or a commodore 64?

i did.

having owned a mac II se and now about to buy a g5 in a few weeks for home, it really made me think.

when i first started in this biz, 386 and a 233mhz processor was the shit.

where the hell are we gonna be in 10 years?

nearly 20 years since i started on commodore 64 in a math class in roughly 10th grade.

absolutely ridiculous the pace of the growth and maturing of technology.

think about it for a second where you started and the stuff you used back when. i tell you, it really shocks and amazed me how we all bob and weave with technology, and actually how short the time period really is and the tremendous amount of growth experienced during that period.

Wow, I'm 33 years old and I can remember my first computer, a Commodore Vic 20, and the one game I think they had at the time, Blue Meanies from Outer Space. It's been a LONG time but if I remember correctly the games came with a booklet of code you had to type in word for word before you could play, and if you made one mistake you got the dreaded "syntax error". A buddy of mine had an Apple (fucked if I can remember what model back then) and used to play Castle Wolfenstein for hours. I can't believe what were essentially stick figures shooting each other could hold our attention for so long.

Gee. Thanks. Thanks a lot.

Started with an Atari 800 in 1980. I was the SHIT because my parents actually sprung for a floppy drive.

Now that's old, man. You have a few more years of partying left.

funny to think about. I dont remember my first computer name, but I do remember having to save shit to those 5 1/2" "floppy" discs. all i used to for was to play lame games, and type papers on a program called "bank street writer"

shit, i remember when i graduated high school my dad made me buy a laptop. i was so pissed i had to spend my money on this. when i first went to college, all i used to do is use it to look up porn and beat off while my roomate was gone... then one day i thought "huh, wonder what this webmaster link thing is"

i was on the net early on and just didnt get it... i did make some money spamming aol in the early 90's and by spamming i mean sending 1 email at a time whne i had a telecommunications company...

i remember getting flamed by people and getting scared i was going to get in trouble... LOL....

technology moves so fast now. i cant wait to see what is around in the next 10 years...

I used a Vic20 to write a simple Basic program based on a random number generator and actually got it published in magazine.

I thought I had really made the big time - now I couldn't write 'hello world' in any computer language.

me for sure.

fuck it.

i remember when the guidance counselor suspended me from school because i refused to take advanced trigonometry. he argued until he wanted to hit me that i would need all that shit. i told him, sorry, im going into an art, i don't need it. at the time i had no idea what the hell i was gonna do.

now that i am knee deep in metrics. i am glad i mastered business math and the basics.

none of that other shit is in play. i may stand corrected when i get through my programming classes that i am in now.

Straining my brain here.

I think the 2600 came with Combat. And that game where you shot ducks out of the sky.

Could be wrong. Bed time ensues for this old man.

I remember recording BASIC code to tape cassette that i had programmed into my Atari 600XL...

I used to buy code books that had programs in them.

Just getting a fucking square to draw on the screen was sweet!

A1R3K, you are so right! It's crazy to think about how quickly and how much technology has evolved!!

Get a load of this...my family's 1st computer:

APPLE II AND II+ Introduced in 1977, the Apple II came with 4K RAM and hooked up to a TV and cassette tape recorder. A floppy disk was available in 1978. In 1979, an enhanced II+ came with 48K of RAM. Screen resolution 280x192x6.

TOO Many Things!! Who would have ever thought that I would have cum...er, I mean come...so far!

My grandfather died in 1964 when I was still a typically naive teenager. Shortly after his death I was thinking about how I envied him for all the changes he had seen in his life, the like of which I wouldn't experience.

I soon realized that I couldn't have been more wrong, although it took me a little longer to realize how much social change also occurs in quite short periods of time, as well as the more obvious technological changes.

Nowadays there are all kinds of discussions I avoid, because I learned a long time ago that however strongly people may feel about a particular moral or political issue today, wait 10 or 20 years and they will be equally passionate about a different point of view. Over the years it gets hard to take many things very seriously, as you realize how transitory they are.

There is however another perspective, which is that beneath the surface of all the changes, a great deal remains fundamentally the same. The automobile is a good example: packed into it is technology which has been largely unchanged for 50, 60, 70 years and more.

When I started dabbling in online communications, everyone was on 2400bps modems and EGA/VGA was the shit. When 9600 bps modems, I remember reading Computer Shopper and dreaming of forking over the $500 to buy one. LOL

I anticipate WIFI getting better and faster. HSDPA is getting big here in the Philippines now with 3G

No, it wasn't pong. Though that IS a crappy game. This one involved the military somehow, but you could barely tell because of the crappy graphics.
