the earth is around 4.5 billion years old and most people are basing arguments on weather patterns over a few decades. you dont need a doctorates in math to understand the problems with that.

have you watched an inconvenient truth?

you do know that one of six ice shelfs in canada just broke off in under a hour? Shelfs that have been there for far longer than 100 years.

if you're so sure that everything is fine, that this is a bunch of evil "propaganda" that the politicians or whoever are rolling out to make a couple more billion dollars in "quick fixes", why are you even discussing it? So everyone here feels better about the global warming problem?

If you really really want, you can fly to vancouver, and i can show you trees that are budding in january. It smells like spring in downtown vancouver. Then you can explain to me, with all the research you have done, why that's happening in the middle of winter.

While you're at it, you can also explain why i type in "greenland melting" and i see pictures of greenland melting from the top down. Or why villages in the himalyans are about to be groups of refugees because the water supplies are slowly melting away, water supplies that have been there for thousands of years.

        and i'll reply, "coping mechanism"

That's just one tiny little thing that it will affect.
3/4 of the water in the us comes from mountain ice packs? Are you on medication? And if it does melt where shall the water go? In the ground, or evaporate, what happens to evaporated water I wonder? Oh it goes into the air and forms what.... clouds, what do clouds do when they are full of evaporated water? Oh thats right it falls down as what? Rain, and where does the rain land? On the.... (you'll get this one think hard) ground, and if the ground it falls on happens to be a cold mountain top what happens? Oh it freezes, and what happens if it melts, or falls where its warmer? Oh it goes into the..... ground.... And if it falls on the ground where does it end up? Oh in our water tables, and what happens if it ends up in our water tables, it gets sucked back out sometimes using what we call....... wells, and what happens then? We drink it and sometimes we pee, and it ends up where? In the ground..... ok Im bored now... lol

You're well read on global warming? Sounds like you reading the wrong books. How about posting some titles so we can do some reading too? I'd be curious to know which scientists believe that dumping massive ammounts of carbon dioxide and other "greenhouse gases" have no effect on the atmosphere.

I actually started watching the documentary last night but turned it off after I'd had my fill of Al Gore. Is it a documentary on global warming, or is it a documentary on Al Gore? All the non global warming shit in the movie removes any shred of credibility it may have had for me.

Now, I do believe global warming exists, but I don't take the word of Al Gore as fact.

This just proves that the sheep will eat the grass no matter what side of the pasture it's on.

look, this came off as really condenscending, and i want to apologize.. i didn't mean it to sound that way. It's just something that this issue simply cannot be ignored, and there needs to be shit done.

If you think about it, and i think the movie states, the countries that are doing the most damage faster than anyone else, is countries in south america burning forests off, and the gas fires in russia.

If we can tack on sanctions to countries for not falling into the western sway of arms and arms selling, why can't there be talk of santions against these countries until they fix the outrageous polluting problems?

If you think about it, brazil and russia present a far larger threat to everyone, and thing, on the planet then NK with nuclear weapons.

Exactly. Some People here are not looking at this properly. Global Warming doesn't mean that it's hotter out all the time, it is trying to show that in general if you take an average over the year or a couple of years the temperature is starting to rise. Look at any Historical weather data and you'll most likely find that on any given day in any given place, it has probably been a lot hotter and a lot colder in years past. No one can ignore the fact that the weather patterns are beginning to shift. If anyone's worried about it being cold now, wait for the summer, I think it's gonna be balls hot just about everywhere.

Gee, I see you learned something in 3rd grade. The fact is the majority of drinking water in the western US originates from snow in the Rocky Mountains. When there was little snowfall 5 years ago it had an effect from California to Nebraska. There is not enough water in the water tables to supply everyone with water in those areas for any extended period of time, nor would rainfall. The fact is if the Rocky Mountains stopped getting snow the whole western US would turn to desert.

let me say it this way:

everyone in this thread who denies the phenomenon of so called "global warming" is therefore ok with the way some countries - including the USA, China, India or Russia - handle their responsibilities towards this planet while most of the european countries are just plain stupid for trying to save energy, oil, cut down co2 and preserve clean water - do i understand that right?

well, then i guess i'll buy a hummer, burn down some trees and club some seals while i drive around and make sure that all neighbours lights stay on by waving at their motion detectors...

People sort of messed up when they coined the phrase "global warming". Think more "global climate change".

Few things I will point out.
A lot of southern California's water comes from Northern California, this water is stored in several lakes and reservoirs. The water in these is filled some by rainfall during the rainy season which is usually let out to maintain levels, the majority comes from the melting snow pack during the non rainy seasons which keeps them as near full as possible during peak usage. Our snow levels up here are shrinking.

I doubt anyone can really argue that the polar sheets are also melting at an extreme rate. This of course is not only leading to rising water levels, but it is also effecting the salinity of the oceans. This messes with the conveyor system. Not to mention the more ice that is loss the less it reflects and the faster the remaining ice melts.

This could go on and on, and no I have not yet watched this movie yet.
What us humans can hope for is a huge volcano going off in a major way, sure it will kill a lot of people but at the same time it should restore the polar ice caps.

scientifically speaking it is refered to not as global warming but global climate change. The reason is that while there may be an average aggregate warming if you localize your search you might see it being colder. The fact remains that the overall global weather is changing and when it does things like the jet stream and japan current can change. Those are major engines for weather and when those change all bets are off.

Ok well if we are all around in 5 years, we can discuss the next big doom and gloom scenario that all the people with governement grants come up with. You can go right down a list over the last 30 to 40 years and 1 by one see they were a bunch of horseshit.

Some inconvenient facts that Mr. Gore didn't see fit to bring to light:

                                                  - On CO2 emissions and raising temperatures, could somebody please explain this graph to me:

                                                  - From 1986 to 2000 central Antarctic valleys cooled .7 degrees C per decade with serious ecosystem damage from the cold.

                                                  - Both satellite data and ground stations show slight cooling over the last 20 years.

                                                  - Side-looking radar measurements show West Antarctic ice is increasting at 26.8 gagatons/yr. Reversing the melting trend of the last 6000 years.

                                                  - Antarctic peninsula has warmed several degrees while interior has cooled somewhat. Ice shelves have retreated but sea ice has increase.

                                                  - During the last four interglacials, going back 420,000 years, the Earth was warmer than it is today.

                                                  - Less Antarctic ice has melted today than occured during the last interglacial.

                                                  - Antarctic sea ice has increased since 1979.

                                                  - The greater part of Antarctica experiences a longer sea-ice season, lasting 21 days longer than it did in 1979.
                                                  .

You people do realize that all your doomsday scenarios are based on projections and forecasts, right? Do you have any idea how bad the track record has been for these types of projections in even the last 10 years? The actual temperature increase varies from the predicted increase by more than 300% over the last 10 years. 300% is a pretty large margin of error, don't you think?

How come Scientists can't predict weather with any degree of accuracy for next year but they're bang on about enviormental changes that are going to happen over the next 40 years? Could it be they don't really know at all?
                                                    .

Climate Expert Says NASA Tried to Silence Him

The top climate scientist at NASA says the Bush administration has tried to stop him from speaking out since he gave a lecture last month calling for prompt reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases linked to global warming.

The scientist, James E. Hansen, longtime director of the agency's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, said in an interview that officials at NASA headquarters had ordered the public affairs staff to review his coming lectures, papers, postings on the Goddard Web site and requests for interviews from journalists.

Dr. Hansen said he would ignore the restrictions. "They feel their job is to be this censor of information going out to the public," he said.

Dean Acosta, deputy assistant administrator for public affairs at the space agency, said there was no effort to silence Dr. Hansen. "That's not the way we operate here at NASA," Mr. Acosta said. "We promote openness and we speak with the facts."

He said the restrictions on Dr. Hansen applied to all National Aeronautics and Space Administration personnel. He added that government scientists were free to discuss scientific findings, but that policy statements should be left to policy makers and appointed spokesmen.

So let me make sure I have this straight. From 1940 to 1970 despite co2 levels rising, the temperature variange decreased but that's not valid because it's now the 21st century? So the effect of co2 which according to some is the driving factor behind "Global Warming" works differently depending on the century? Wild stuff man.

Man I swear, it's almost like we don't have all the information and can't really predict what's going to happen 40 years from now.

I don't think we're all trying to deny Global Warming so much as question what we really know about it. I think the science in the area is still infantile and in many cases suspect at best. Scientists and data come down on both sides of the issues. The actual track record for prediciting enviromental changes over decades is dismal at best. We simply don't know.

Imagine calling a doctor and saying "Doc I have this ..." and him responding "put a bandaid on it!". But Doc, you're suggesting a solution when you don't even understand the problem!

The reason there is no hole in the ozone layer anymore is because the united states took a lead position in eliminating the propellents that caused the hole.

Same could happen with the greenhouse gas emmissions. The technology to do so is already in place.

But the real issue is not forcing companies through government regulation to change how they operate. It's how you as an individual are willing to make simple changes to reduce the amount you personally contribute to the problem. Are you still using incandescant lightbulbs? Why?

And it goes on and on and on to figure out your own personal "carbon footprint" and reduce it. The changes we as individuals can make ourselves can flatten the upward curve of CO2.

I'm not advocating for reckless abuse of fossil fuels or neglecting air quality all together. I just question that panic surrounding "Global Warming" and believe we really don't know what's going to happen in the future.

I applaud you for it, but what you are doing is building a sand fort wall to stop a 100 ft tsunami about to crash onshore.

I disagree, Anthony. I really do. I think we can even use an anaolgy in the business. Would you rather try to get 10 hits to 10,000 ads? Or try to get 10,000 hits to 10 ads? I think you get there faster with 10,000 ads.

Making big businesses and backwards countries do the right thing is part of it, but it still falls on every individual to do what they can. Incidently, China's government mandated gas mileage standards are far better than the US. The US automakers are suing California because California had the audacity to require all cars sold in their state to meet emissions standards that match Chinas over the next 10 years.. how dare they, lol.

I've also looked into Solar and Wind power. I currently rent, but I would absolutely love to have a house where I could have a nice solar panel (about $20,000, I've checked), and a wind generator (price varies, but utility companies are required to buy your excess energy, and there are local ordinances on tower height to consider). As well as on-demand hot water heaters and other efficient appliances I've checked into.

I dont preach to people in SUV's or anything crazy, but I still quietly do my thing and would encourage others to at least pick up a 3 pack of compact flourescent bulbs. They work great, and with only 15 watts you get the same lumens as an old fasioned 60 watt (plus they dont burn out for 5 yrs)
