HOWEVER.... The flow of water was stopped completely over both falls
on March 29th 1848 due to an ice jam in the upper river for several hours. This
is the only known time to have occurred. The Falls did not actually freeze
over, but the flow was stopped to the point where people actually walked out
and recovered artifacts from the riverbed!

Isnt that before the mechanics were put in to regulate the flow of the falls? I read that if all the water was allowed to go over the falls i would errod in less than 100 years. Scary that there is that much water.

i dunno about that fast or why wouldnt it already have vanished..

I watched a documentry about it before showing the progress of the falls over thousand of years slowly moving up the river.. the guy was below the falls showing where the old falls used to be and he showed these interesting holes in the rocks, where 1 single pebble had fallen into a divet. then over hundreds of years of the river going by spinning the pebble around in a circle the pebble would bore a deep uniform hole in the rock, anyways he pulls the pebble out and drops it free , heh that poor pebble has been trapped in its own hole it bult itself for hundreds of years.. kinda trippy . dunoo if i explained it as interesting as it was to watch lol

Unlike the Horseshoe Falls (which has never frozen over), the American Falls are susceptible to freezing because of the small amount of water flow. Normally the American Falls has a peak mean flow of 10,000 cubic feet of water per second. The winter mean water flow is reduced to less than 8,000 cubic feet of water per second. This minimal flow is barely sufficient to cover the rock face of the Falls. During harsh winters, ice frequently built up at eastern end of Goat Island causing an ice dam to reduce the water flow to the northern channel which feeds water to the American Falls. As a result water flow is restricted sufficiently that any remaining waters quickly freeze over.

If that is true, then why are they frozen in the pictures?
