There is a Topps set that says

"This complete set includes all 385 base cards from 2006 Topps Football, with 75 of the league?s hottest Rookies including Reggie Bush, Matt Leinhart and Vince Young!"

What does base cards mean?

Not 100% sure but I would assume it would mean 'basic' cards, that is if the set had any rare cards, such as holograms or foils, they would not be included. Otherwise I'm not really sure.

yeah just the common cards, no insert sets or any of the hard to find cards. basically a "complete set" as its called of Topps Football

And is it possible to just buy the whole set of a particular team?

I believe that insert cards are cards that are limited and usually, but not always numbered, so say you might get a card numbered 10/25 or it might be 135/1000 and/or they'll have an autograph or parts of jerseys, multi-player autographs, etc.

I have a nice Julius Jones card numbered 4/5 which has his autograph with a part of his helmet, jersey, shoe, and football, it's pretty neat.

proly have to go to a card shop to find a team set......tho sometimes wallmart or target type stores will have team sets of the local or most popular teams.

Most "sets" are just the regular line up of cards. They would include any rare card, if by definition rare happens to mean a certain players rookie card ect.

As stated though they however do not include any insert sets. Those are purchased separately. Some sets of cards have more than one type of insert set. You may have a hologram set, a all stars set, a foil set, and on top of that speciality cards from certain locations only. I.E. Walmart insert, Target insert, comic con insert, and so forth.

Yes you can buy entire sets, insert sets, complete sets, and so forth. You can turn to your local card shops if you desire and really wished to be scalped (remember I did this) same goes for team sets. Or you can buy them online via places like ebay and other card forums (check out topps shop for example on some very special stuff).

Be super careful in regards to grading though. Best you can typically hope for is NM or near mint at best. Mint is a near illusion in the card world. Avoid any place that uses such words as mint, limited, hard to find, ect. Real buyers and sellers know what is what already and those people are just out to gather the rubes. Be extra super careful if you think about buying unopened boxes or packs, specially so if they happen to be wax packs.

Lastly it is often a great deal cheaper to buy a 95% completed set and seek out the missing 5-10 cards than it is to buy a completed set. Often the price difference is staggering to say the least, even on not so valuable cards.

Oh another last note. Watch a few auctions first to really gauge the pricing of certain items. Do not feel if you only see one right now that you must buy it. Unless it happens to be a unique item or very very hard to find, more will pop up and often. I have seen sets and cards go on swings of a twenty to sixty percent price differences on the same things just at different times.

Thanks everyone for all the great information!

The munchkin is bummed becasue I got him the aforementioned Topps set, and there are hardly in Cowboys cards in it. We've got about 2 inches of cards left to sort through, and the only card we've got thus far of our team is Demarcus Ware.

I was stupid when I bought it, and thought that 'complete set' meant every player on every team.

I will hit google and see if I can find a set that has all the 'Boys.
