Americans and the Bible

From a ?Americans and the Bible: Bible Ownership, Reading, Study and Knowledge in the United States?

* Only half of adults interviewed nationwide could name any of the four Gospels of the New Testament
* Just 37% could name all four Gospels
* Only 42% were able to correctly name five of the Ten Commandments
* Seven in ten (70%) were able to name the town where Jesus was born, but only 42% could identify Him as the One who delivered the Sermon on the Mount
* 38% of Americans believe the entire Bible (including the Old Testament) was written several decades after Jesus? death and resurrection
* 12% of adults believe Noah?s wife was Joan of Arc
* 75% believe the Bible is the origin of the saying ?God helps those who help themselves? (actually a saying of Benjamin Franklin)

You leave Joan of Arc out of this, she had to put up with that drunkard of a husband Noah for six years before she got enough of his shit and cut off his head with a bowie knife.

I'm not a communist but I've read Marx. The point is about education. Not religion.

Why educate them - the leaders of the church already educated in the bible, think that they can justify killing other humans, sodomizing kids and running financial institutions that would have made that dude named jesus's head spin - using the "good book"

Its a shame so many good people in this world over the last 4000 years have been so brainwashed

From the time I could be carried in, I attended Sunday school and church services every week for 16+ years. I went to private "religious" schools - Baptist and Episcopalian.

I'd be hard pressed to answer some of your questions. Too many dead braincells ;)

There's a church here where the minister has a blog. He opens each Monday with that the sermon is about, what scriptures he's going to talk about and invites interaction on his blog and during his service. Having a minister spend 30 minutes each Sunday telling you HIS/HER interpretation of a small paragragh in a book that's been changed numerous times over the past few years and requires you to adopt their interpretation is wasteful to me. The dude with the blog might actually inspire me to attend church again

If they are taking a poll in your neighborhood, I believe it. I could answer all those questions without blinking.

Well the facts are what they are and it is very much a testament to the hypocrisy in which we live. I too am one that has "religion" in my past. However because God blessed me with having my own brain I have been able to decide for myself the ways in which I live and believe. I don't think many of us would dispute the bible being Gods word... however the intended interpretation of it as has been pointed out certainly can be disputed there is no doubt about that.

I've spent much time learning who I am and it matters to me more than many I know. At the end of the day if you can look in the mirror and be proud of who you see there... isn't that what really matters? You know the rights and wrongs that are fundamentally taught and accepted by your society. Do you do them? Are you a good part of the fabric in which we live. Or are you part of the evil that hurts and divides? We all do and say things that we choose to do and say. Everything has a reason. You can be who you want to be... no other thing religion or otherwise can dictate who you are. At the end of the day its still just you and the mirror. Think about it.,

One thing is clear to me through all of the learning and that is that the world not simply Americans but the world are living under the oppression of inherited faith systems and traditions of the past. These are so intertwined that it has caused people to rise up against each other and "religion" is indeed a very evil thing. I think that if any of us took the book , the bible, even with its sorted interpretations, and studied it asking God to allow you to see what you should see... we would all see that God is not anything like "religion" has painted him to be. It is quite astonishing to me having seen how much hatred flows from some religious people. But one thing you and I must say about most of them is that at least they do what they do because they truly believe its right. Can we say that? At least they are trying to do what is right. hmmmm that stung a bit I know. But it is important for us to feel the sting at times, don't you agree?

Remember to ponder thought of self when you look in that mirror.. only a better you can come from it. And for the ones that are offended.. this what not my intent. Obviously I am not religious by any stretch, in fact I loathe religion. But I know God and he knows me. I love him and always will. But God made all of us sexual creatures and that is a fact. I think the sooner everyone gets that simple fact and stops living life through the eyes of some small group of misguided leaders, living in another time long ago ... and thinks for themselves... the world will be a much more enjoyable (and loving hehe) place. That sure would suit our horny selves much better.. I know you agree with me there.

One final note.. it is fact that at one time in some countries men gladly gave their very lives to have just one of those pages that you would use as a rolling paper dude. How is that for education.

Great topic Colin I like the ones that make us think deeper every once in awhile. xx

I often find it a little sad that many people who call themselves Christian are just too darned lazy to spend time and effort learning anything much about their religion. LOL, it's allmost as thought they think that merely being a member of the "club" is enough to gaurantee them entry to heaven when they kick the bucket

Have you red the bible? I have..it was the most painful book I've ever red in my life, not because of the content but because of the way it was written.

Koran was much more enjoyable.

Yeah, I actually like the way it was written. I think the King James translation is a powerful translation and there are some incredible stories in there. "In the beginning", the "fall", the flood, the Exodus, the purging of the Canaanites, Sodom and Gomorrah , David and Solomon, the writings of the prophets during the captivity and then in the NT the Gospels, the Acts of the apostles and Revelations. Them are damned good tales!

I didn't like the Koran so much. Was a snoozer for me.
