SSL certs are now $1400 a year

Thanks to Microsoft all sites running SSL will now be forced to purchase Extended Validation SSL Certificates for their sites if they want to come across as legit. Next month IE7 will start displaying a green 'safe' bar only on secure sites that have EV certs installed, and of course these certs are $1400 from Verisign. These are basically the same certs that cost $125 five years ago. I hope IE dies a very fast death.

A goddam this shit - it's bad enough having to pay shit when a self-signed cert would do just as well, but this is just nuts.

Unfortunatately, the world and his dig are all sheep - the majority haven't even heard of FireFox.

One can only hope that some justice system calls fuckedup on this - like the EU did on WMP bundling....

This doesn't really affect me. The billers have to purchase the ssl ticket, I can still use the cheap one for webmasters and general bs spots throughout my sites. I can pull down all ssl tickets on my side and sales don't stop or drop.

Just another reason why FF is slowly overtaking IE.

well, the best thing to do is educate people on your sites about what is happening and why you don't have the "green bar"

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Firefox, opera and safari are implementing the same thing, IE just happens to be the first to add it in. No one is forcing anyone to buy one, but if you want your customers to feel confident when pulling out their cards online then you'll have to bite the costs. Not sure why everyone is claiming they cost $1,400 when you can find them for less than $400 a year with minimal effort.

Can it be shared, like for 3 shopping carts owned by the same company and hosted on the same IP.

A link to your 400.00 one would be nice.

Also, in IE7, when you click to checkout on the old SSL, you get a BIG warning page worded in such a way that it is just a little short of calling you a scammer and a phisher ....

This really stinks.

& its just to make the address bar green. which might be better because right now if its not secure it goes Red. The everyday surfer when they see bright red everywhere will prolly not purchase. just my thoughts...

If many surfers are like me then who gives a shit.

I don't pay attention to that cert shit on a site because I figure it is bullshit.
I get invalid cert from sites that I know are good and trusted.

Wow, that is interesting.

But at least it will weed out the fake ssl's better. You can always do a self signed SSL for free too if you have a dedicated i.p.
