Securing Hard Drive From Physical Theft.

Whats a good way to make it so that is someone jacks my tower I still have all my data?
I couldnt care less about the tower itself really, its cost is TINY compaired to what it would cost me to rebuild what i lost on my hard drives. Even with backups, they arent every day, and hell I use an external drive for that too.

I was thinking of maybe bolting the case to the floor or something, or running a sata cable to a raid 1 array in one of them wallmart safes, and then just bolt that down.

Or am I just being paranoid ?

Create a hole in your wall,
insert walmart safe into hole.
Insert hard drives + cooling device into safe.
Connect hard drives to PC.
Close Safe.

When you need to ugrade just buy a new safe an drill some more holes in your walls.

The F.B.I. would love to raid your home then.

Holes in the wall isnt good though.

If the FBI raided my place I would really need to get that on Video.
Pretty sure Canada wouldnt like the US invading like that though.

I've had a couple buddies that have lost their towers when they have people over, someone would just walk away with it I guess. 2 towers and a laptop were taken on new years like this from people I know.

if they are that important to you .. just don't have people over that you think would ever steal your shit .. ??

Or just bury your harddirves under the basement and cover them with concrete ...

Step 1... don't let people into the room with your computer stuff. Get a door that locks. That helps a whole bunch.

Number two, you could go for network attached storage, and operate that way. You could put those boxes pretty much anywhere, and secure them (bolt them to a wall or floor, example, or put them in a locked closet AND bolt them down).

if you have to take this much effort to secure stuff in your own home, you need to get new friends, your old ones are fucking thieves.

I dont let people over that I dont trust, and I dont really throw parties.

But it happening has made me think, if someone grabbed my tower and took off it would be far far worse then a hard drive failure. And while B&E theft is low here there is still the chance.

3 seperate house parties had a computer stolen, 2 were the towers, and one was a laptop. Knowing the people whos computers were taken it wouldnt surprise me if the front door was open for anyone to walk in during these parties, but the rooms with the computers would have been locked.

The best thing you can do is to disguise it into something completely benign. For me, I have a 80gb 2.5" hard drive inside a Mr. Potato Head. I have it running into a hub inside a cabinet, and from the hub to the computer. Since it's 2.5" it doesn't require a lot of power and you can do it through the hub. Dunno if something like that would work for you (due to small size of 2.5" drives). One of my friends has a similar setup to mine but much more elaborate (his is in a death star hobby kit from hobby town USA).

use a high powered laptop and take it with you when you leave the house....Back when I lived in Ohio, I used to hide my laptop under the kitchen sink when I left.

My tower sits on my desk, I could drill holes in the bottom of the case and bolt it to the desk. Then lock the case. My Asus motherboard has a port for chassis intrusion.

These would be for just casual theft, of course. You could use Torx screws on the case to resist someone unscrewing it also.

get a full size tower , a bit of wood and cement , make a mould in the bottom of the tower and pour the cement in , let it set , install the componets ,

or find new friends

when i used to goto lan parties , i made an alarm for my pc, 3 phase , one is if the case side is removed the alarm will go off , if the power is disconnected the alarm will go off , movement of the case , the alarm will go off
