The pain relieving components in cannabis do include the thc but you are also looking at needing a higher cbd and cbn content for pain relief effects.
Medical strains are better than Marinol, which has little effect for chronic pain.
Canada has a new drug in addition to medical cannabis, a pharm drug that addresses the issue of cbd at least -- Sativex, it is an oral mouth spray. Approved for MS patients with spasm and chronic pain.
Indica strains are generally higher in cbd and cbn content.
There are around 60 different cannabinoids in cannabis that work together with the thc.
Jace, sorry to hear about your allergy. :Oh crap You live in GA? I don't think that is a medical state. Consider that it might be chemicals or mold in the cannabis you've tried before rather than the cannabis itself, or perhaps pollen on the plants. Medical grade female flowers contain no pollen and are checked for chemicals and mold. Maybe try to grow your own and see if you have the same allergic reaction. Hope that helps!
