LCD Monitors worth the extra cash?
I like the idea of them taking less space but can they take much punishment?

What kind of stuff do you do with your current monitor ?? As long as your not moving it all the time I would bet it'd last just as long, I think that you do have to keep it out of direct sunlight due to fading on the screen material, but other than that mine seems to be pretty sturdy. A lot easier on the eyes also !!!!

LCD is *far* less fragile than CRT. One is a sheet of plastic, one is a hollow glass tube. It is as simple as that. Just because a CRT is more beefy doesn't mean it won't break...
Also, the electric shock and possible explosion of a CRT (they implode because of the vacuum, but the shards can then fly about a bit) make them far more dangerous whey they break. Something to think about. If you can afford a LCD monitor, the purchase is a no-brainer in my opinion. I am using the Apple 17" Studio Display, and it is fantastic. Especially on my cluttered, narrow desk. I only wish I could afford one of the big ones...

If you play games, don't do it. The older ones smear, and the newer ones just aren't very good at it.
They are a ridiculous premium though, unless you really have a good reason, might as well just buy a high end CRT monitor. Cheers, Backov

I've wanted dual, triple or quad lcds for some time now... there is this one brand that puts em all together into one stand. But, everytime I go to a store the LCDs just don't look clear enough (seem fuzzy). I've got 19" trinitrons now and those are nice... but shit, talk about a lot of desk space.
However, they are cat paw resistent. (have two) Brad

Unless I'm mistaken, the price/resolution ratio still favors standard CRT monitors. So, if money is a major consideration...

I've got a 15" LCD, and its probably one of the best investments I've made. Dunno whether I'm just particularly susceptible, but after about 3-4 hours staring at a CRT I would begin to get eyestrain headaches.
No such problems with the LCD no matter how much time I spend sitting in front of it. Going to go for a 19-21" LCD as soon as prices come down a bit. |

I bought a 15" LCD and was so happy I went and bought another one. Now I have the dual setup and I love it!
I don't think I'd ever go back to a crt, nevertheless a single monitor, DUAL LCD'S IS THE WAY TO GO! Also for those running XP on a LCD heres a tip to make your fonts nice and sharp.. Desktop properties - > appearance -> effects -> Use the following method to smooth the edges of screen fonts: Select ClearType |

Wait a year until they release the megapixel LCD screens. Better quality, no dead pixels, higher refresh rates etc. If anything, will drop the price of the normal ones tremendously.

Clear anti-aliased text on an LCD takes a different algorithm, since the pixels for each color are separate. In the upcoming update to the Mac OS, Mac OS X 10.2 (due in August) there is support for this feature. My LCD already looks crisp thanks to various OS X technologies, so I can't wait for this.
