have you ever stolen wireless?

I got to admit being on the move a lot I tend to jack a lot of wireless!

one time I was actually lost trying to find my friends house in georgia and her number didn't work so I was kind o fucked. I pulled up the car and my coputer without being asked picked up a signal! so I went online and tried to contact her for directions

is it illegal or what?

Ignoring the legalities, you're a fool if you connect to an open AP and do anything which sends potentially private info. This includes loading up your favourite board for a quick look at new threads. Everything is sent unencrypted, so the owner of the AP or anyone else in range can see which sites you load, cookies you send, forms you submit...

If your comp uses POP3 to check email (which is pretty standard) and checks periodically then connecting to an AP will reveal your username and password without you even realising.

While that is very true, most people who leave their access point unencrypted haven't got much of a clue about Wi-Fi technology; they just go to their store, get conned by a salesman into buying a 125 Mbps Wi-Fi router because it will "make your broadband faster", rip it out of the box and plug it in.

You ever heard of free wifi spots?

I was stuck in a hotel in Budapest last summer. People in the hotel said they don't have Internet in the hotel (doesn't that SUCK?) but I picked up a signal from a nearby apartment, and was using it for all my needs.
If wifi is open, use it.

I sometimes use my neighboors wifi at home, when my provider is working on my connection..

Doesn't need to be the owner of AP snooping, anyone within range can capture the packets. There's still also the chance that the AP is something more than a cheap router with a default connection - someone connecting to my (deliberately open) AP will have everything logged.

True - it could always be a honeypot, or be intercepted. but frankly where i live most people have difficulty turning on their own TV...

neighbours have been paying my internet bills for ages now, like someone said, if you can't put a key on your internet there's not much ichance of you understanding how to decrypt that info. definitely not any of the people living around me at least.
