Since you never really made it into the business, then I would say, just quit and get out. Everyone thinks you can just make quick easy money in this biz and thats not the case.

One important advice: never give up and most of all, read all you can about the biz!

Put together a kickass site and then get a good review from Jane's Guide. It'll help to make your own content if you can't afford to get exclusive photos shot for you. Not only will that reduce the price of exclusive content drastically, but you won't be competing against sites with the same photos.

True. My tgp went for 1K to 100K that way.

I can´t move the left side of my body now, but the traffic is good.

You guys are f#&^ing useless! Is this the reason for name of this board???

I'm kind of asking myself the same question because I want to start a couple of new sites - I probably can get up to 5k in traffic from friends' sites (and my own) - but then? To bang my head against the wall? Give me headache just thinking about my site AND the wall... To wait for "natural" growth of the site is kinda too slow to cover the expenses. And anyhow: there'n now a zillion of sites out there with which to compete.

And who has the time to read and read and read (and write) to find some wisdom?
So how about some decent tips

You can get up to to 5k? In that case, you have enough to work with to make it grow.
If you have a TGP (which you most likely do, like the rest of the world and their little sister), just make a design that has good productivity, get a good tradescript, and your traffic will continue growing, as long as you keep prod up.
How to get good prod? Experiment, track clicks, see what works best, keep on improving it. Manage your trades will, cut the bad ones, add new ones. Eventually you'll have something that works. (might still want to update the design after that occasionally)
Then, start acquiring occasional sources of traffic. You should be in DMOZ already, which will help get SE traffic. Build small freesites linking to your main site, and make sure those also get in DMOZ. Make galleries with your recip. Basically, make sure your link is everywhere.
That additional traffic should allow for even faster growth, as well as the bookmarkers you'll be getting.
If you have a design with really good prod and are really impatient, buying some traffic might also help. Waste of money for free sites, if you ask me, but some people seem to like it.
Then, the biggest factor comes into play: longevity. The longer your site exists, the more bookmarkers you get and the more links are made to your site (like people who really like it, newbies making their first site without tradescript and just putting up your link thinking they'll be able to send enough traffic, and then abandoning their site, gallery recips, your own freesites).
That way, you'll grow. Just put a lot of work into it and keep it up for an extended amount of time.

Why? When I broke into this business there were no resources like there are now...a newbie has a huge selection of resources dedicated to teaching...if the tools available today were available when I started, I can't imagine what kind of income I'd be seeing...if someone is too lazy to read up or work it further, they don't need to be in this business...in any other industry, you have start up costs and expenses...this business is still very inexpensive to run, but those days are grwoing dimmer by the day...

just the way it works, like it or not....I just don't see why I should be expected to hold the hands of someone and just give away what has taken me years to learn...

the exception being the affiliates who send me traffic...in that case, I have a vested interest in their education....

Are you fucking kidding me? Listen man, I have no problem helping people out. Have no problem sharing my knowledge. But I have a HUGE problem when little boys like yourself "don't have the time" to read some articles and ask GOOD questions. Go read the fucking articles, do what they say, THEN you can come back and ask questions. I would be more than happy to help you out then, as I'm sure others would.

"I don't have time for this". Pff. None of us have the time to waste on lazy kids like yourself, so what makes you think we should spend it helping you out when you'll just turn around and bitch again because nobody will show you how to jack off when you turn 13?

I'm very quickly beginning to see why everyone hates newbies. Not because they're new, but because they want something for nothing.

dodo has nailed it on the head. Just image with me if you will. You have 10K a day in traffic that is real honest to god traffic, granted most of it is from TGP's so it's mostly Chinese or hitbot traffic, but it's traffic that you don't have to make up, then you come along and use a hitbot to run that number up to around 1,000,000 a day, now were talking. Now the key is to find some noobies and sell that traffic off for $600 per 100K, so now you can sell off around 300 of those slots the first month. You encourage your noobies to use partnership programs that pay per trial, then you go and spend $25K on buying up trial memberships so that they make their money back, and come back to you next month and buy 200K for $1000 You've now netted around $ 455,000 for 2 months of work, and thusly making more $$'s than most people here will make in 10 years in porn

This is like any other business, if you don't know what the hell you're doing throwing money at it will not help.

Why is everyone advising newbies to spend money on stuff when those newbies haven't even got the network and knowledge yet to know where to buy the right shit without getting ripped off??

Someone should get to know a bit about the business before throwing large amounts of money at it, otherwise it's just a big waste of it...

And about the whole advertising/buying traffic thing: If a website isn't working well, the traffic will be lost. Plain and simple. Testing needs to be done in order to make sure the design and concept work.

Newbies should start by reading boards, checking out resource sites, studying other sites and reading tutorials. After that, they can start with low-risk experiments, and when they have decent knowledge of the business, then and only then should they start investing larger amounts of money.

Cheers to Sly_RJ for calling me a "newbie kid" - went down like a cold beer on a hot day

I'm 47 and doing this since early 1998 (that's a bit over 4 years)- now I can finally forget my age
It's just that I don't have all the time in the world to sit in front of the computer, and unfortunately haven't found enough timesaving shortcuts either - so I spend too much time on my galleries, etc.
I know what you mean: iget these emails, too: "I want to start an adult site like yours. Can you tell me how to do it and how much money I can expect to earn?" That sort-of-thing.

But I thought that spunker explained the dilemma fairly well:
Just exactly how is a new webmaster supposed to get traffic started at a new site????
Banner exchanges, dont send me shit!
Cant do link trades worth a damn (with no traffic to trade)!
Free search engine submissions take for ever (still dont send much)!
No money to submit to big engines and then still wait for ever!
Made no money to get content for TGP's either!

and all he received was a beating

As I stated: I'll probably manage to get some 5k/day, but on the other hand my main site is almost stagnant in traffic for over a year (o.k.: I'd been travelling for over 6 months and updating from a laptop whenever I had the chance to get onto the net - didn't help much to keep the site really going - but was FUN).

On the other hand I don't like cheating in any way (hitbot) - just thought some people would come up with a decent idea - instead I found many answers as arrogant as the guys on porncity's board.

Anyone with the slightest of business sense will keep their traffic making methods well locked away. Sorry but this is how some of us get to eat.

In that case, I apologize.

But seriously, what kind of response do you expect to get with a statement like "I don't have the time to..."? Time is one of those things that you have to prioritize. When people say "I don't have the time", it really means "I would rather spend my time doing..." or "I have too many other time commitments right now." Nobody here wants to waste their time with someone who isn't going to push into this full throttle.

From what you described, I would say both of the latter statements apply to you. If you've been in since 1998 and STILL don't have much, you best be spending your time doing the things you love doing. If you had even half of a heart to put into this, you should already be doing quite well...

Not true , I don?t have one traffic trade or partner only a SE group started in March 2001 which is in place for obvious reasons. For me the internet is a perfect platform for working alone. I am a female in a male business which 2 years ago forced me into thinking why not trade with yourself over time, it will be less aggravation in the long term.

Selling porn to men is an art, some have it some don?t. Having the ability to choose the right pictures and text then placing them in the right place at the right moment can be the difference between you needing 1000 or 100 hits to get a sale. There are some brilliant site and content makers on this board but for every one there are 10 who to be honest make me wonder how they manage to get dressed in the morning.

What does being female have to do with this? It's irrelevant.

I don't believe in isolationism. If you do, that's fine. You do your thing, I'll do mine.

People tend to not treat this as a business. What would happen if I called up the owner of the local McDonald's franchise and said, "Hey, I've been running my lemonade stand for a week now and still I don't have any sales. What gives? How about you tell me how it all works?"

If you are going to be an entrepreneur, you'd better have at least two of the following (preferably three; with four you should be unstoppable): Time. Money. Creativity. Peristence.

The desire to learn is a wonderful and critical element of long-term survival in this or any other business. Free advice is readily available IF you are willing to network, and to give back at least as much as you get.

(If anybody finds the magic bullet/word/potion, please let me know.)

Cheers,
Mishi

What planet have you've been on the last 20 years?
What does being female have to do with this? It's irrelevant.

Since women's lib it's all about equal opportunity, and since women have it "so much harder" in this "male dominated" society you have to give them extra credit! That's why every decent board of directors needs it's "quota women", even if you find only 20% females in their work force...

Back to spunker's problem: I'd rather see someone honest supported [Made no money to get content for TGP's either] than the guys who go out and copy everything. Back in 1999 there was this israeli guy called Sagi who stole all his content from a few sites (30% or so from me, another 305 from germanhard!). Now I am a pedantic german, so I do color corrections and stuff like this (time consuming), and whenever I have a gallery done I put it up on my main page and submit it to TGPs a day later. And in those days I had regular top spots with most of the big guys [jjj's, snake, ampland, hcj, easypic, you name them - I was the first to do only series...]. This guy Sagi got MY fresh galleries including thumbs and submitted them the same night - so the next morning when I went to submit them they were already old stuff. His site fuckingseries.com was soon up in the top 20 of sextracker = that's an easy way to get traffic...

spunker tries the harder path and should deserve some credit.

Oh, that's right. I guess I should be begging for "extra credit" for all of my difficulties in life, too...

spunker is trying the good path, the right path. The same path that 90% of us here are doing. Nobody needs to get an extra pat on the back simply because they aren't cheating. That's ridiculous.

Anyway, did you bust this guy, Sagi?

...that was a joke, man!

No, never got this Sagi guy! I think he's still doing large adult sites with lots of sneaky things. Never mind! Karma will get him (or a palestinian suicide bomber?)

How do you get traffic? An age-old question.

1. Learn the search engines, the world's greatest traffic and it always goes to someone

2. Start a TGP, submit galleries elsewhere and recip yourself on the galleries.

3. Don't spam, but work message forums.

4. Buy keywords on pay-per click engines like altavista.

5. Search link lists for dead domains and reregister them.

There are a bunch more, but that's good enough for tonite.
