What's the best place to buy a diamond engagement ring?

Anyone have any experience with www.bluenile.com or any other online diamond stores?

Ooooooh, diamonds are one thing that I know a whole lot about Blue Nile is not the best....not by a long shot. eBay isn't the best either, although deals CAN be found. I recommend www.whiteflash.com (get A Cut Above) and www.exceldiamonds.com (get the Superb Certs). At those 2 sites, you will find extremely high quality diamonds at extremely competitive prices. White Flash is VERY good at custom making settings as well.

And one more thing....DO NOT BUY DIAMONDS AT THE MALL. Period. The end. On diamond message boards, we call them maul jewelers for a good reason. If you have any questions or if you want to run a few diamonds by me feel free to email me and I will give you my opinion (webmaster at quality paysites dot com). I am a huge diamond freak.

Can you give me more detail why the diamonds at the mall suck?

Ive heard they aren't flawless by anymeans.. and thats why some of them are priced at a lower cost...

Well typically speaking, at mall jewelers you're going to find much lower quality diamonds at higher prices. That's pretty much it in a nutshell. There are definitely exceptions....the Leo diamond for instance. I've actually checked out a few Leo diamonds and they are quite nice....BUT they are also quite overpriced. So, yes, you CAN find decent diamonds if you know what you're looking for (although they are rare), but they are typically overpriced.

Awesome, trust me--they are good. I've bought diamonds there in the past and they are top notch. Their custom work is also VERY nice if you have an idea of a setting that you want. They are also very good about modifying their stuff, if you're not totally happy.

2 more fun links for other diamond enthusiasts: www.diamondsbylauren.com for colored diamonds and www.thefacetscollection.com for awesome diamond eternity bands/wedding bands. Those are my favorites.

Diamonds should always be bought online, period.

Do not talk about something you know nothing about. Buying online is not only cheaper but you will end up with a better diamond if you shop at places like Whiteflash. And make sure it comes with AGS cert as they are the best nowadays.

Tacoris are a nice choice, they and dvatche are probably the best setting designers out there.

Sweet! I have the royal crown in 18k yellow gold with platinum prongs (round center stone as well). I fell in love with it the second I saw it. I think that Vatche's designs are timeless and will age quite well. Good job

They are not underpriced, they are just a huge buyer of quality stones and have small overheads compared to idiots who run mall stores. Even when people think they are getting a deal from a mom and pop store they are getting ripped off as the mom and pop store get fucked by the distributor because of lack of buying power.

sorry man but when it comes to shit like diamonds or any high priced/valuable item, buying off the internet is suspect.

due dilligence was the gist of my post.

I sure as fuck wouldnt take any advice from an adult webmaster board about anything other than adult business.

if you disagree with any of that, just proves my point.

Sorry, but you're totally off-base. Whiteflash (for instance) is an extremely reputable company and anyone who knows anything about buying diamonds online knows this. Nothing suspect about the transaction at all. Buying diamonds at the mall is much more foolish.

Why take diamond advice from adult webmasters? Well, because some adult webmasters are relatively wealthy and as a result might have lots of experience buying diamonds. If you were to ask the same question on a diamond message board (i.e. where to buy online), you would receive the similar answers to those that were posted here at GFY.

Do research firs and learn the three “C” .. Buy the rock itself and have it mounted. My wife’s ring was less than 2 carats but it was flawless and worth 10 times more than 5 carat rings that I’ve seen. The thing is, its not the size that matters but clarity, color and cut.

Actually the #1 most important C is the cut. If the diamond is cut well, it can mask a lot of imperfections.

Had to edit this one.. Not true.. I have seen perfectly yellow diamond stone in the ring that he had for sale.. And it was fucking expensive. Kinda like black diamond I guess..

This is very true - I'm a novice who's been researching the topic recently and have found online diamond messageboards like the one at pricescope.com that have lots of expert advice - and the advice that CC is giving seems right on target to me. I'm nervous about buying a diamond ring online, but it seem like it's not only the best alternative - it's the only alternative to getting ripped off.

The only way you are going to get a real deal is to find a wholesaler who can give you 35-40% off the wholesale list "Rap" prices. But then you really have to know what you are doing As well, soon as you say "custom" up goes the price, I was chuckling about the platinum tipped claws, what they didnt make on the diamond they sure made up on that

Actually it's me with the platinum prongs and that setting is NOT custom.....it's by Vatche. Either way though, Whiteflash's custom prices are very reasonable actually (I've bought several custom pieces there as well). Check them out if you are ever in the market and compare their quote to your local jeweler's quote. It's quite amazing actually.

no I'm not - Did i not say due dilligence?

I didnt say ALL internet purchasing was suspect, research before buying was my advice.

of course there are reputable online sources for buying stuff.

i agree about buying diamonds in a mall, which i never said or inferred.

for any expensive jewelry you should really buy it in person. That's just my opinion, everything looks different in pictures.
