    Photoshop still the standard?

Hi guys, I've finally decided I need to get better at graphics for the times I don't want to hire a small task out. So I am going to start spending a little time each day learning graphics. I'm wondering, is Photoshop still the gold standard, the program I should learn to master?

Also, anyone know of any good sites that offer tutorials/training on photoshop and graphics? Thanks...

Photoshop is what the guy who needs to have just about everything in a program will likely recommend. For a lot less money, most people will find Paint Shop Pro very powerful and yet much easier to use than Photoshop (plus, it has browse...a way of viewing directories full of images as a page full of thumbnails). Corel Photo-Paint is good and one I particularly like is Ulead PhotoImpact.

Actually, depending upon what you want to do, you might use ThumbsPlus. That's a good one for doing batch alterations where you want the same color adjustment, resizing, watermarking, etc. done ona large number of images. You wouldn't use it to compose a splash page graphic or banner, though.
SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.

Photoshop is the king of print graphics.

For web stuff you can also use Fireworks:
