    I want to move - tell me about places

    Right now I'm about 1.5 hours outside ATL at the start of the Blue Ridge mountains. I love my house, I love my view, I love my neighborhood, I hate what my town is becoming - overgrown.

    Here's what I want:

    small town (5-10K tops)
    seasons - I love cold weather
    in the US so I can travel back to ATL easily
    privacy
    A decent amount of land (5+ acres)

    I'm not interested in an "up and coming area". That's what I ended up with here. I will probably keep my house here and rent it out as a vacation home and stay here when I visit. Ideally, I'd rent a place for awhile in the new area first.

    I plan on this being a minimum 2 year search.

    Tell me about where you live, where you lived, where you've visited that I might like, etc.

      Sequim, Washington...

      The Costco here if awesome, and I have never been in line for more than 5 minutes.

                  OK, keep 'em coming. I actually have considered rural Washington as well as rural Oregon. I have loads of RE info on Montana and Wyoming, but it seems the rich folk got there faster than I could - they want some OUTRAGEOUS prices if you want land with utilities!

                  Vermont - hadn't thought of it. I've always thought of it as expensive - is it?

                  Thanks folks - any more info would be great - I'm a nomad by heart and I've been here 5.5 years. That's about a year too long ;)

                      Charlotte NC is right up your alley.

                      Not like, inside charlotte, but in that area. You can get a nice place, decently priced, tons of land, winter the full 9 yards.

                      Check out indian trails NC. Its about 10-20 mins out of charlotte and is a nice area.

                      You also get all the sports and all that jazz that charlotte has to offer.

                          Charlotte??!! Hardly much winter and the city is growing faster than Atlanta!! It's got 1.5 mil in the metro area - I want 5K-10K and preferably less I go up there 1-2 times a year and dread it every time I don't want sports, I don't want ANYTHING. What I'm looking for is a lot of NOTHING

                          I'll take a look at Indian Trails but if it's just 10-20 minutes out of Charlotte, it's going to be a suburb in 2-3 years.

                          Ashville used to be a good area but about 10 years ago it did what my town's doing now.

                                          check out Silver City, NM... 10K people but it is really sparse and spread out... it's cheap, surrounded by mountains and forest, and has snow but not too much- pretty much gorgeous all year round...

                                              Have you looked into Idaho at all?
                                              80% of all the cities there are less than 5-10k population

                                                          I live in a small town in southwestern Indiana. And when I say small, I mean it. 3.5K maybe. 2 whole stoplights.
                                                          Lots of similiar towns around.

                                                          We have winters. Land is available, and my guess would be it is cheaply priced in comparison to many other parts of the nation.

                                                                                          This is a resort neighborhood and based on what the other places are going for, even now I could get $150+ a night for it and I planned on keeping it furnished anyway. Just take out some personal things, replace the decent dishes with Corelle and off I go

                                                                                          NH is looking better and better, BTW Close enough to ATL where I could visit, w/o always being expected to drive 1.5 hours to be at EVERYTHING the family and friends do.

                                                                                                  I was offered $65K from a builder for the property next to mine which I bought 4 years ago at a tax auction for $1K. If I wanted neighbors, I would have sold it already

                                                                                                  Though when I go to actually sell the house, all offers for the additional lot will be taken seriously
