Pit Bulls are only as mean as the owners make them. I had one that my son would crawl all over pull his ears and toment the dog all day long.And the dog would just get up and hide if he felt aggrivated. But then again if you would come into my house and yell at my children or try and discipline my kids you might then loose an arm.

Two factors that influence how vicous a dog will be: nature and nurture. Every dog regardless of breed is affected by how its raised and treated, but Pit Bulls are more likely to attack from the word go because of their breeding.

keeping pitbulls is a bit like playing russian roulette - if you're lucky you'll have a nice dog - if you're unlucky someone is mauled or dies. What's the point?

Everyone acts like the pitbull is some monster. Jesus christ, it's a fucking animal! Sometimes things like this happen. Don't think that this couldn't have happened with any dog or animal. I highly doubt this animal was out to kill this child. If it wanted to, it would have done so.

Given how old it was, how do you know it had any clue that it was doing anything wrong?

Pitbulls and similar breeds should all be put down forever. No argument holds up not to support it. They are vicious all together.

I know. People who say such things make me SO angry. Hell, you should hear the things people say about my Boxer - and she's the sweetest baby ever. My aunt is CONVINCED Boxers are vicious bloodthirsty creatures - which is so far from the truth that I actually laughed in her face when she said that.

Sadly, the truth is that Pits CAN be aggressive - but have you ever noticed that so many of these dog attacks come from dogs rescued from dogfighting rings (where they are abused and essentially trained to kill or be killed) or families/environments where they get practically no training/socialization. If this couple can't even take care of a baby (and it sounds like this baby was being seriously neglected/unsupervised), they have no business owning a dog, especially such a high-maintenance, challenging breed as a pit.

Pits can be wonderful pets, but they need the right owners and a lot of training and exercise. My neighbor has three small children, a cat, and a pitbull - the dog is thoroughly well-trained and gets a lot of exercise and thus it is incredibly gentle and well-behaved. People don't seem to realize that most dog "problems" come from being incorrectly handled. YOU NEED TO BE PREPARED AND EDUCATED BEFORE YOU GET ANY DOG!

Oh, and for the record - Golden Retrievers, terriers - they've mauled children before too. But you don't hear about it, because they're not OMG evil like Pit Bulls or Presa Canarios.

Not sure this is the parents fault. this could have happened to anyone. it's one of those freak things.

How could it not be the parents fault? They said it would of took a hour for that to happen and the baby was in the same room as they where. At that age the puppy still has his baby teeth. Could it be the parents are druggies who didnt feed the dog for a long time. So the dog saw the baby as a possible food source. Awhile ago I read a old man had a mutt, lived alone with the dog and died. Dog had no food, started to eventually eat the dead body of the old man. Hunger makes instinct scream out.
All dogs can be dangerous, depends on training and more importantly socialization when its a puppy. Ceasar Milan has many pits that were problem dogs and now they arent. Also if pits were gone tomorrow, people would bring out aggression in another breed to compensate for lack of penis size. its not the dog, boston terriers were originally breed to be fighting dogs, it can be breed out.

While they may have agressive characteristics, they are also extremely loyal and obedient, which means you can train them to NOT be vicious just as you can train them to attack. But there's something like a 1/10 000 000 chance that a comet will fall on your head, so there's always going to be cases of dog attacks ...

I had a staffordshire bullterrier for 10 years which is a similar breed to a pit bull. He was agressive to 3 people in his life ... the postman, a friend on a motor bike, and greg lasrado. If any of you know greg, you'll instantly know my dog was a genius ... not violent.

The fault for this is totally on the parents. You don't leave a puppy with a new born unattended. From what I understand there were in the same room. I guarantee a baby cries alot as a puppy chews it's toes off. If the parents didn't anything then they are to responsible.

Rottweilers were bread as cattle dogs - actually marched with the Roman empire as herders and then were adopted as cart pullers by butchers man - Media says they were guard dogs - there history is well documented though. Dobermans are 40% Rottweiler and share many of the same characteristics. Again I don't own a Pittbull - but I don't think there is anything wrong with them. A useful suggestion would be licensing where certain dogs are put on a license list and mandatory training and socializing classes were put in place before adoption of one of these dogs is allowed. I took my Rottie to many classes and read numerous books on training - and as a result got a good dog. They are alot of work and not everyone should have the right to own a dog that has the potential to be dangerous.

This is a tragic event with out a doubt. I have owned Rotties and Pits and I have small children. I am not a drug dealer nor a felon. I'm a single mom who adopted 2 children and to keep their piece of shit birth mother away I have a 6ft chain link fence and dogs that do not like strangers. I however would never leave my small children alone with a hungry puppy. These parents deserve to have their child taken away with out a doubt. I do disagree with the ban on Pitbulls. Granted if this dog has been with someone who trained it to be mean it should be destroyed. ANY dog regardless of breed should be destroyed if picked up from a home where fighting has occured.

I can see both sides of this coin. I had a beautiful red nosed pit bull that was as gentle to my children as any 'pet' would be expected to be. She slept on the couch and went bye bye with us and played lovinly with my children. When I was younger my cousin had a german sheppard that had been a family pet for years but one day her son was laying on the dog watching tv like he had always done, and the dog attacked him severely scaring his face for life. Do you think all German Sheppards should also be destroyed? Its not fair to the entire breed to be killed becuase something bad happened.

Firt off there arent "thousands" of pit bull maglings each year,, you do hear about it often because it makes for a more shocking story than "poodle bites girls toes".

Secondly for the amount of pitbuls compared to attacks and black people , i would think you would eliminate black people befr you eliminated pit bulls, they are much more dangerous... responsible for literally hundreds of deaths per year as opposed to one or 2 that pit bulls are.

And lastly every mutt they can't identify as something else, they just call it a pit bull. Makes for better headlines.
