Anyone here use windows XP?

I'm getting a new machine and they only install XP, or I could get it with no OS and install my own. I'd rather it already installed so I dont have to deal with hardware compatibility problems or anything.

I currently use w2k server and like it. Never used XP.

Do you like using XP or does it suck?

XP is pretty good. I upgraded from 2000 professional. Luckily, you can change the display so you can have it mimic "classic" windows (ie, the gray-ish windows/taskbar of Windows 2000).

All in all, I don't have any major complaints about this OS. If you really don't like Windows, maybe you should try Linus' OS.

From what I heard its crap for people who have no idea how to use a PC.

Never used it but doesn't sound appealing.

It's a lot better than I thought it would be. So far, it has been extremely stable for me. The interface is a bit simplistic however and watch out for that fucking messenger. XP doesn't just let you delete it but you can get rid of it (check Google).

I've been running it since early April with no problems. I like it much better than 98se, more intuitive, I think.

I have XP Pro on all my machines except the server which has win2k server, never had ANY problems with it, but than again never had any problems with 2k Server as well.

Both are very stable (XP Pro is much stabler than the Home edition) I like 2k Server better though , no sure why, I just do.

Been running it pretty hard for about 3 months and haven't crashed once. Took a little bit to get familiar with it but I like it overall.

I have found it allot more stable and have been able to run everything so far.

Only problem I have seem to had is the inability to burn to cdrw with various media. This makes no fucking sense but it works in the other win98 machine with the same burner. I still don't have an answer to this one.

But the only thing that sticks out is the fucker is bloated like a motherfucker with shit starting up, and services all over the place. It isn't easy to turn off everything you don't want if you are concerned with boot time and speed, etc. If you have a fast computer you probably won't notice, and if you do maybe you can find some tweak sites on the net.

I just got a new computer and it has XP. I don't really see a whole lotta diference between XP and 2000 except the cosmetic GUI.

I'm running XP pro for about 3 months now, after the hell of ME (which came with my current main computer) it's a BIG improvement, but it still carries a lot of these typical Microsoft quirks

You can't un-install Outlook (which I never use!), and a few days back I created an .htaccess file in Notepad, and XP refused to let me re-name it from .htaccess.txt to .htaccess (had to do it in WSFtp) - just the way Microsoft always knows better what you want to do!!!
Another nuisance: I set up Explorer to open all GIFs and JPGs in ACDsee - no! Microsoft insists to open GIFs in it's own image viewer which is shit... Work-around: open a JPG first and then start to scroll...

I managed one blue screen of death so far (can't remember how, though) compared with about a dozen it would had been on ME...

Some programs behave strangely, like Paintshop Pro 7 (which I use a lot for my graphics). It handles the memory not as well as under ME, so with a large floating selection it's down to a crawl with half a gig of memory, and with some odd freeware fonts in vector mode I get constant crashes of Paintshop (whereas these gave no problems under ME or 98SE)...

FINAL WARNING: be prepared that you need a lot of hardware resources...

Using XP on a workstation....only class A hardware...for several
months now. It has not crashed 1 single time....I shit you not!
Yes I tweaked it to get it classic and removed some bullshit out of
it but it works really well.....

Just don't try to install 10000 of shit programs and removing the
shit again without cleaning the registry properly and you'll be
fine.

Ive been running XP Pro since the crack...er...final version was released. I love it, no complaints.

It runs rock solid and fast on my lowly Celery 333 (yaya stop laughing, did I mention its a DUAL Celery, ha! so there!) Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, and Unreal Tournament all run fine.

WITNESS MY PERFECTION!

XP Pro in classic mode is very similar to win2K pro. There are quirks, but then windows has always been quirky. You just learn them and learn to work around them. It is VERY stable. I have crashed almost not at all (except when my hubby is programming and testing on my 'puter but that's his programming and not XP)

You do need to make sure you keep all your drivers updated to keep things from slowing down. Also there are a load of crappy advice windows like clickpimp says. "You have unused icons on your desktop" blah blah blah. I think you can turn this option off but I've never bothered looking. Also the fact that MSN is automatically installed is a bastard but if you use this Trillian thing you can just turn off regular MSN after startup and turn on Trillian.

There are worse operating systems to be had.
