It was one year ago, one of my friend (music videos director) invite me to shoot how he will be shooting the next music video for new Ukrainian R'n'B diva CHERRY. and I say YES.
The quality is not the best because it was Canon EOS 350D with kit lens and built in flash. But here they are

There are several Canon 50mm lenses.[*] The best one is The EF 50mm f/1.2L USM. Price is 1600$

But do not forget that Canon EOS 350D has a 1.6 crop so your 50mm will be 80mm on such camera unless you have a full frame sensor camera. So i would suggest you to get the this one CANON EF 35 f/1.4 L USM for 1523$

or this one CANON EF35mm f/2 for 351$

The 35mm with your camera wil be 56mm
or get this one CANON EF 28 mm f/2.8, for 219$

or this one CANON EF 28 mm f/1,8 for 516$

they will be 45 mm on your camera.
Currently I am shooting with Canon EOS 30D and got the Canon EF 24-70 L f/2,8 USM. This is really good lens. and for night shooting it's ok because of f/2,8 actually it's not enoughf of zoom, but you can get the Canon EF 24-105 L f/4,0 IS USM with image stabilizer.

First, set your kit lens at its extreme (I'm assuming it's the 18-55mm so it will be at 55mm) and then walk around and make sure you're comfortable with that focal length, realising that you'll need to physically move to frame your shots rather than just zoom in and out. Then go buy a 50mm f1.8.

Ignore what Star 69 says, I think he's a bit too excited.

You're far less likely to regret buying a good, cheap lens (the 50mm f1.8) than starting out with a super expensive "L" series and realising that paying 4 or 8 times the price of the cheapest lens doesn't result in a proportional improvement to image quality.

BTW, with the kit lens you can often get decent results just by stopping down. Turn your dial to "Av" and set the aperture to somewhere around 8.0, or higher. The higher you go the less light gets in, so you may need to increase ISO to compensate. Experiment a little to see what works best for you.

BTW, higher aperture (f) number equals greather depth of field, which means it's easier to capture both a near and distant object in focus. Stopping down will often increase the sharpness of the lens as well, with many having a "sweet spot" between about 8.0 and 11.0.

You'll need maximum ISO and aperture open as wide as possible to be able to take shots in that sort of environment, ideally a flash as well...

Maximum ISO is not so good because of noise. Ofcourse you can work with noiseninja http://www.picturecode.com to reduce the noise but it's a lot of work. unless you have a lot of time.

If you're in a club it could mean the difference between "dark" and "discernable" (unless you're using a flash). Canon's high ISO is pretty clean anyway.
