Direct Admin is easy to install and is so easy to run things on. . . oh, and it really works well with CentOS.

If you want to go that route, you should still have my ICQ.

thanks bd, the problem i do such boring work i want to go into putty (or whatever ssh client is recomended) and do something interesting instead of just installing a GUI ... id like to do it the hard way if that makes any sense.

im not going to be doing any reselling ill use the server myself so i dont need to setup virtual accounts for clients or anything like that - ill probably put some blogs on it or other nonsense - seems to me cpanel, directadmin is for working with hosting biz. i just want this server for myself. i want to set up i guess apache, php, hell i couldnt find perl on the damn thing i guess i need to install that but dont know how

i want to pay someone to chat me through a full setup i think its bare bones CentOS right now. i really dont want to install a control panel then install everything via GUI. my brain needs stimulation.

99.9% of our clients with dedicated servers use DA, and <1% are reselling.

It just makes it very easy to add domains, db's etc . . . but have fun

yea they will install directadmin free but i dont want that i want to learn something i want to do it the old fashioned way, learn some commands, that kind of shit.

if you feel like answering questions for free - my first would be is putty a good ssh client or would you use something different. and then, what the hell is the first step? start installing shit i guess. but i have no idea how to do it, or how to do it safely for that matter - so thats why i offer to pay someone because im absolutely retarded in this dept.

the only answer you'll get from a real sysadmin is RTFM
Sysadmins are not techears and don't like holding your hand.

What you're looking for is someone that read Linux for Dummies and can
replicate it for you.

Someone already answered you correctly. Decide what you wanna do with your server, then go to your hosts board and find out how to do it. If your host doesn't have a board you may want to try another host like rackshack's board.

Before you pay someone who claims they "are top notch" to completely fuck up your server, check out:
http://wiki.centos.org/
http://www.centos.org/docs/
http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/docs/html/yum/

Why pay to have your server fucked up when you can do it yourself for free. Seriously, it's not rocket science. You just need to be able to read the docs.

Google is the best teacher you could ever want and I doubt that any sysadmin on the planet would dispute that claim.

If you're gonna learn from scratch, then scrap the centOS and install FreeBSD. And if you're not planning on hosting other people's sites, then forget the control panels... you're not learning anything if you use CPs.

Drop me a line on icq 283914791 if you wish.

But seriously, before spending a tonne per month on a dedi, install Linux on your home PC (unless you have a mac), and learn from that - it's all the same stuff.

O.K. first thing is to get two ssh tools:

putty is mandatory, I also use winscp a gui ssh tool.

Before you start decide on the control panel, I highly recommend cpanel since it updates most security holes nightly.

But it basically takes over the server so you can't change too much.

next I would recomend webmin

thanks for bumps and links and everything!

supert ... thanks ive googled a lot and didnt find those on my own. those are the best so far!

klen - thanks for your offer but honestly im expecting to pay more than 20 per hour. also english is not your first language. no offense. i also dont want to start with webmin - if i understand correctly that would automate a lot of the stuff i want to do via command prompt (im trying to stimulate my dying brain here)

borked - ill hit you on icq - i have crazy hours but if i catch you ill catch you - if we work something out we work something out ;) ... i intend to get a shitbox and books and do *nix installs - but i can afford this server, i can afford to completely fuck up the OS, and pay the host to reinstall it, and i dont need it online - so im ready to have some fun ... why freebsd and not centOS?
Quote:

EXACTLY!!!!

chaze - thx for your input ... ill check out winscp, and are you saying you recommend webmin over directadmin? this cp crap will come later, when i learn all this stuff and get lazy. but first i want to understand it.

thx everyone

I would just buy unix for dummies or a similar book, go through it yourself, and then maybe hire someone to walk you through some parts that you may not understand.... like darksoul said, no serious sys admin will spend his time babysitting a newb.... if you are completely clueless it would probably take a few hours just to get logging in and a few basic unix commands down...

i (sincerely) appreciate your comments - i guess i need to learn that sysadmins have some elite status or something??? why? because they went to school and read some books? i did too ... just different subjects. i's be knowin how too reeed.

if im willing to pay someone more than they make per hour at their normal job - their "im a sys admin" attitude would be - imho - ridiculous. but, im ready to understand if thats the way it is ...

I wouldn't say they have elite status, but any good freelancing sys admin that doesn't live in a 3rd world country bills high double digits per hour for his work. For teaching you are probably looking at $100+/hr. It just doesn't seem like a wise investment to piss away few hundred for someone to teach you how to login and run a few basic commands. If however you already know the basics, then spending few hundred to learn tricks on how to secure your server, improve performance, etc, then it's not too bad of a deal.
