Umm, that is "nation" small N, in the same way that the eskimos and indians are a "nation", small N, not a seperate Nation, country, whatever.
More importantly, a nation (small n) without the unified country of Canada. A certain amount of uniqueness because of history, language, and other issues, but part of a larger whole and not seperate or outside of the whole.
Done correctly, this should pretty much make the seperation issue a non-issue for the next few years.Comment

Well, you start getting into the issue of language and what the word "nation" means in french, versus what it means in english. French people put more emphasis on nation a something closer to country or statehood, where as in english nation is more like "group", such as acadian, inuit, the various indian nations, etc. Think of it as something closer to tribe or cultural grouping.
It changes things in some senses, where rather than splitting up the country it could lead to Quebec pushing for similar arrangements to those that are given to native peoples, taxation, self government, etc. One wag on the radio suggested that it could even lead further down the road to the definition of the true "quebecois" territory, which likely wouldn't include anything west of about Trois Rivieres, nor include the areas to the north that are part of settlements with the native people's of the north.
If the Quebec people are not careful, they could end up getting exactly what they want and finding out it isn't anything like what they want at all.Comment

I used to live in Bellingham Washington right on the Canadian border. I used to watch Canadian TV all the time. i remember when the issue was voted on about 15 years ago. I didn't understand the arguments then. From what i recall, i was at one point trying to understand and all i really remember was general BS like "we speak french, we're different... we're unique" type crap. I don't remember any serious arguments that justified breaking apart a country.... it all just seemed really arrogant and misguided... but i'm just a dumb Merikan' myself, so what do i know.Comment
